There's actually occasional contests where, as Chrisdice mentioned, the person (*ahem* Chrisdice, sometimes that person is female *ahem*) with the most balls wins.

Typically you and some number of other participants will each chose a machine and place an equal wager which you then feed to the machine. The person at the end of the day who has the most balls left or has won the most balls is declared the winner.

Pachinko parlors love this game. They make -lots- of money from it.

In Japan, Pachinkos are games of skill/chance and they are set up in Parlours

a player will purchase balls(actually Rent) and then will proceed to pick a machine of their liking and start playing that machine with the balls they have rented.

while playing your goal in pachinko is to get one of the balls into the start pocket this will give you a chance to go into a fever and in the process win you some spheres.

the more you win the more balls you get, you then trade these in for prizes.. the more balls you have to trade in the better prize you get.. but have no fear you can take all the crappy prizes to a shop usually down the street from the parlour where you can trade the prize for Money...

thats it in a nutshell.. of course none of this really applies to a home user as well you control the spheres..

at this point in my early pachinko journey - I'm just watching the shiny balls fall and watching the androgynous golden rod saunter across the screen .

When I was in Japan last year, I found out there is more to this than just hitting the start pocket. My first night in Tokyo I decided the big parlors were just too intimidating so I started in a smaller one at the hotel I was staying at. I've got 3 modern pachinkos at home and knew all about the ball rental buttons and the prize to cash trick thanks to the Discovery Channel. I gave my friend a quick tutorial and he went off and made a sizable donation to the parlor playing Jaws and Evangelion.

I wandered around and found machine I knew nothing about with a cool Tea Ceremony theme and started playing. It wasn't too crowded but there was an old Japanese lady playing the same machine next to me. I noticed her watch what I was doing and later she nudged my arm and was pointing to the shooter. I figured out she was trying to tell me to push the little button on the lower left of the shooter to stop the balls so I did. I soon figured out that when some of the videos would play before a reach or bonus you're pretty much wasting your balls and you should wait for the bonus to start. After she saw I figured it out she gave me a nod and continued playing.

A bit later I hit a big bonus and the lady jumped up and hit the call attendant button on my battle counter. When the attendant kid came she started yelling at him. I must of stopped shooting during the commotion because she turned around and smacked me and pointed to the shooter. It was very surreal to be in front of that machine with jet lag in a room with 130db of sirens and noise as this lady was yelling at the attendant on my behalf while I sat between them. My friend tried to take a picture of the situation and some other guy started yelling at him. What had happned is the machine was paying out some but not as much as it was supposed to be. The attendent fixed the machine and I ended up winning the equivalent of about $280 on that machine. I tried to give the lady some pachinko balls but she wouldn't take them. She left around the same time we did and she made sure I found the secret window which was nowhere near the parlor but in another part of the hotel. God Bless the nice Japanese lady .

I guess I learned a few things from that first "real" pachinko experience:

    - Just because you own 1 or more pachinkos doesn't mean you know what you're doing I'm still confident that I did pretty well for a Gaijin especially for a first visit to a parlor.
    - The little button on the lower left of the shooters is key to maximizing your winnings
    - Pachinko is definitely a skill game. Some of that skill is picking the right machines to play
    - Never attempt to take a picture inside a pachinko parlor or you will get kicked out
    - Don't walk around a pachinko parlor with a beer or you will get yelled at
    - The "real" pachinko experience can not be replicated at home

Everybody needs to save up for a trip to Japan

This is primarily because you are supposed to order drinks from them. Not walk in with your own food.

Of course, many parlors don't allow food or drink at all.

    ...

So has a guide on the modern pachinko parlor been written or does someone need to take some time out and post one?

Deton8r - this is exactly what I'm slowly learning - using the shooter "stop button" on the throttle to maximize your chances. Sounds like you had good experience

I've mentioned this before, that I often play by shooting one ball at a time,

I have convinced myself that it gives more power to the ball and allows for more accurate aiming...

But I could just be crazy??

Depends on the machine, of course.

Usually if I'm trying a new machine for the first time, I'll test it to see whether or not the machine is social or solo. (Completely made up terms, by the way.)

    The basic principle is such:

If the balls bounce towards the hole fine on their own it's fine for solo play. Therefore, I usually spend 3 balls at a time and hope to equal or exceed that in payout by getting at least one in the hole.

If shooting multiple balls (3) actually makes allows the balls to bounce off each other to your detriment (i.e. I was playing Indy and the ball went into the passageway and dropped down only to be knocked off course by another ball), it's a requirement for solo play. So 1 ball at a time.

If, however, the balls lack the necessary momentum, it's a hanemono, or in the many cases where two balls hitting one another on the ramps helps one get into the winning channel (or passage as it may be), I'll often send down 6 or even 9 at a time.

I rarely, if ever, go full throttle (hanemono and fevers as the single exception). But that's personal preference and it generally helps extend your time in any parlor.

Ah... One more thing... In chance time, due to the wings opening at random, it's often to your benefit to just throttle through. You lose very few balls overall during that period and in some cases can even make a net gain regardless of it you hit the maximum number of queued spins (again depending on the machine).
