Default My first vintage Sankyo - should I restore or mod

Just came home with a vintage machine to go along side my modern games.
Watching Dan's videos on stripping down and putting new art on playfields has me considering it.

Before I take this kind of action, is there anything special about the artwork on this one? It doesn't appear to be in poor condition and I'd hate to ruin something desirable just because I don't know better.

Sorry I didn't snap any shots of the backside. It kind of surprised me to see everything is held in place by staples rather than screws. Will be interesting to strip this all the way down for a proper cleaning regardless of what I end up doing with the playfield.

My understanding is that the Sankyo cells often use a formica-type coating (the more common Nishijin use laminated paper), which would explain why there's very little water damage. Not sure if removing the nails would damage it, which would be a shame if you ended up missing chunks.

I’d personally just clean that one up, you can still polish the nails without removing them, just tedious. There’s plenty of Nishijins with severe water staining in dire need of restoration; usually available cheap. That way you turn trash to treasure! This one is in too nice of shape to bother with 20+ hours of restoration work and playfield replacement. Maybe convert the lights to LED bulbs if you like.

I vote keep it original. If you come across another in worse condition I say go for broke on it. This one is in really nice condition, I say leave it be.

Either way you should do what you want to.

Have decided to keep it original. Will mostly focus on taking off the mechanical bits the balls pass through to give them a proper cleaning. Still kind of weird to have everything stapled in place.

Up here near Toronto, we've got people asking over $200 for destroyed old ones.
This is pretty typical of what I have available to me in my area - https://www.kijiji.ca/v-art-collecti...ine/1642205786

Hey you haven't posted photos of the Back of the the machine and the inner workings of the Front Ball Launch Door .

The machine in Front looks Very Nice but over all condition Tells The Tale .

It's only original Once so it's up to you .
When things don't go right the 1st time , Step back ,Take a break and come back renewed. RGS

    Have started the restoration.
Looks like there are two layers of plastic parts with the base layer stapled to the wood and the top layer screwed into that.
Overall, it's pretty clean with some smoke and dust build up being the worst of it.

drill small holes threw the plastic and just into the wood as witness marks.. you can then use these holes to put screws threw so you know it goes back exactly where is started life

I agree with Moparformances suggestion to drill a small hole for a future screw, I also use a pencil and lightly outline the parts that are mounted directly to the wood, just an extra step, but it's saved my butt more than once.

This is an excellent tip as there are unused screw holes on the main board that I can use instead of the staples when reassembling.

Here's a little before and after action showing the cleaning in action.

If you had an ultrasonic cleaner, you could get that looking even better.

I have a Sankyo with the same greenish, clear plastic, I really like seeing all the mechanisms, some of my other machines are opaque, can't see anything. I used Novus plastic polish on it, really made it pop IMO.
