So as I said in the 3D parts thread, I just pulled the trigger on a 3D printer. Nothing fancy, it's a Monoprice Voxel (which is a rebranded FlashForge Adventurer 3). It's actually pretty highly rated for such a relatively cheap machine ($400). It has its downsides, mainly that it takes smaller filament reels than are widely available, but the first thing I printed with the sample reel that came with it was a 2lb reel adapter lol!

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with this thing. It's not exactly a speed demon but this adapter is printed in "normal" mode and it took about 4 hours, but it came out great!

So now I just ran a "draft mode" test print of a couple of the parts that jasonlujon modeled to see how it behaves with the clear ABS filament, and I have to say even in the draft mode they're not real pretty, but they are accurate - and it banged these out in a half hour. I didn't want to commit to a 10 hour fine print (almost everything I need in one shot) without seeing a sample first lol.

I also got to see how the clear ABS parts look with the LED backlighting - and I am SOOOO happy with it! I can not wait to really get moving on this!!! Now I just need to sit down and work on learning to do the 3D scans and modeling so I can make the rest of what I need!

Had a little free time to mess around today, did a little painting and took apart a tulip. I was originally going to paint the inlay black which would have made my lack of steady-hand painting skills less obvious, but I like the way it looks with the ridge painted better since it creates a sharp contrast at the corner between the faces. Unfortunately I've also learned about the adversarial relationship between ABS and enamel paint, because aside from my poor detail skills, the paint found every single tiny gap between strands and layers where it could go, and it went there. So now I've decided that I will learn how to do a dual-color extrusion on my single head printer, and just print the top layer in black, which will look much cleaner.

I also have yet to build my scanner to recreate the tulip bodies, because these pics show one of the reasons they need to be printed in black for this project (I don't want light bleeding through, only the petals should be lit). The final product will have two LEDs per tulip, so they will be brighter than this - I also had to stop down the camera to keep from blowing out the pictures.
