    Default Nishijin Derby custom restoration

This a machine I picked up, off of Facebook Marketplace. I original got it for some parts I was needing for another machine.
(It was cheaper to buy this for $25, than get the part I needed from Ebay)

As I continue to pick up low cost machines for parts, I had enough parts to put this machine back together.

nice one painting the chrome frame - i could use some tips on how to de-chrome (or at least smooth the pitting) in order to paint.

I don't remove the chrome. I "scuff it up" with sandpaper, so the primer and paint adhere to it. I use a small wire brush attachment, on the Dremel tool, to clean the glass grooves/channels. On the pitted areas, I just try to sand them as smooth as I can get it.

I'm sure you could remove the chrome with chemicals, but this works for me and I'm pleased with the results.

I have been going the chemical route.
I bought a large plastic tray intended to be used in the bottom of a dog crate, and I lay the chrome frame face down and put enough CLR / water mixture in it to cover the metal. Then I let it sit for several hours, and the CLR removes the rust from the metal and turns it into a sludge in the bottom of the tray.
Any loose chrome comes off too, and you are left with only the plating that is truly adhered to the metal.
Then the process is just like Wayne's, sand the metal down to smooth it all out and then paint it with one of those "Hammered" look spray paints in silver.

Not quite as nice as shiny chrome, but much better that rusted. Pitting is a more complicated problem. The hammered texture of the paint helps hide the pitting is the best way to put it.
You could probably buy metal body filler and fill the pits before painting if you wanted to go that far.
