    Default What a scare!

I wanted to put the token that I used for the token comparison thread back into the Jinn.

I powered the machine up and???
The sounds that the speaker was making ???
The Tulips were open with the lights on???
    The LEDs were all out???
Whats going on? Whats with that dying hawk sound?

I quickly powered down and opened the machine up.

The coin payout solenoid was in the eject position???

The solenoid was getting very hot!!!

The main PC board had chips getting hot!

    What happened?

The machine was just sitting there in its nice new home, solid and secure and was working perfectly the last time
    before being powered down!

I Powered up again to see if maybe the troubles might clear as the machine does not have a reset.

More weird noises from the speaker but different then the first sounds! Faint screeches and odd tones but very weak
    then no sounds.

    OH MY MILLION GOD

    The Jinn is Dead!!

The Tulips were opening and closing like crazy with their light flashing! Its final death throws?

    Leds still out!!!

Opened it back up and everything was hotter than before?

What could it be? I figured that maybe something on the boards or in the wiring has shorted now that the machine was once again put into use.

All of the work put into this great machine now this?

Could I fix it? Would it be possible? The wiring and the boards are much more intensive then on the Coin op Pachinko If I needed to send something out and try to explaine how it is all connected I dont think it could be done.

    Oh the Humanity!! :whine:

Well one thing to do, pull everything off and examine each board and part on the board with the magnifying glass and check for cracks bad joints etc.

I have to check all of the wires for continuity ( There are alot of Wires) and they are very small, old and hard to get at.

The connectors from the wires to the boards are an old type that are easy to damage, if not removed very, very slowly and with a ton of care.

After the machine was torn down and all electrical parts checked and cleaned again I found nothing?

Could it be that some of the chips had gone bad ala Coin Op Pachinko? Say it isint so!

    Hey what is that???

Where one small board dedicated to the sound is mounted to the machine is a long staple that had a piece of scotch tape over it as insulation.

The board was then placed over it and screwed in place to the back of the machine.

The tape had peeled back about 1/4 of its lenght from the back of the machine exposing some of the staple! I assume from the heat of the machine being played as well as age.

This must be the trouble because now there is an exposed piece of metal between the PC board and the wood back of the machine.

The small PC board must be shorting on the exposed piece of the staple!

I quickly put sealing tape over the staple after removing the old piece of tape.

Then I remounted the PC board.

DId that staple cause the trouble? aranoid:

Was the machine permanently damaged from the short?

Well here goes everything..Power up and???

    The Jinn Lives !

The taped staple could not be seen with the board mounted
and I didnt notice it at first as I was too busy trying to remember where all the parts went as I removed them.

The staple holds on to something on the face of the machine that cant been seen from the front.

There are 2 more such staples on the machine and they were also taped to keep insulated from the boards where they are mounted. The staples are about an 11/2" long

Too bad I couldnt remove the staples and use screws to mount what they held.

I cant believe that nothing was damaged from that short.

Owning these Electric Vintage machines can sure be nerve wracking.

Do you use Steven King as a ghost writer?
I didn't want to read to the end of your post. I'm glad it worked out!

Thank goodness you were able to locate the problem...how tragic that would have been for your machine to be damaged by something so seemingly insignificant! Great investigative work!

Nice fix Eddie...That should be on a sticky thread, or in a "how to repair" thread for future reference.

The Jinn is lucky you're such a careful parent. Leaving it on with a short like that for too long would probably end up frying something. Nice debug!!!

And the cool thing?? You put it all back together and you had leftover parts!

Eddie theres hope for you yet .excellent work finding the cause of your failure you dont need anymore teaching if you've already caught the fly grasshopper ...the 70's machines are alot more forgiving then the machines made today if that was a 2000 machine it would have given up the ghost for sure ...
