Default Vintage Nishijin w/Broken Play Tray

Hello, it's been a while since I've been on here, but I'm glad to see it's still active.

    I'd like to get some opinions on a machine I'm looking to buy, if you would be so kind to take the time;

These two Nishijin machines popped up on my local classifieds recently. Only problem, one of them has a broken play tray. He wants $100 for the nice one and $50 for the broken machine. I was thinking of asking him if he would go down to $25 or a little more on the broken one, getting both for ~$125.

My main concern is if the broken one is even worth buying since vintage parts, especially things like the trays that are usually specific to the machine, are pretty hard to find. I'm tempted to get them both, but not if one has no chance of finding parts. Could turn it into wall art, but I try to spend my money on machines I think I can get working.

    Thanks!

the big question is what does the backs look like..

the broken tray up front is a huge problem with playing that game.. but actually finding a replacement wont be that hard..

He claims they both work, however I will definitely be asking for more pictures.

As for parts, my preliminary searches found plenty of overflow return trays, but no play trays. Is it more a matter of patience and diligent searching? I suppose I could keep an eye out for a "parts" machine along the way as well.

    Thanks

Broken one is rather plain, in my opinion, but I would still purchase it. 25 for that one, 50 for the other--I hate paying more than 50. That second one does look nice though...

I too would go $25.00 on the broken one. The nice one is up to you. Do what makes you happy.

    I appreciate the input

One of the challenges in my area is that these machines sell on the high side fairly regularly, making me a little nervous that a realistic offer would sound like a lowball. That isn't going to stop me from trying though. The fact they didn't sell in a yard sale over the weekend gives me some hope.

    We'll see what happens

Quick update; haven't had a chance to see them in person yet, but the pictures look pretty clean. They're even in some basic cabinets.

I don't have any personal Model A experience, however from first glance it all appears to be intact. I can't see the upper track for the Model B because of the wood, but it too looks fairly clean.

Hoping I can make it happen.

Default Vintage Nishijin w/Broken Play Tray

I would not pay more than $20 or so for the one with the broke tray; since you’d have to wait for another tray to pop up for sale; pay shipping; ect… pachinko parts are kinda expensive on eBay. Also; I’ve bought fully intact model A’s for $20 before.

It’s a parts machine as is. Or you could do what the eBay pachinko scrappers do; part it out and sell all the parts at a 1000% markup!

Also; $100 seems too high for the good one; $60 tops around here; it’s not a rare or super desirable model, and I personally would wait for one with less or better yet NO water stains; unless you plan to restore it. I just don’t like water stains…

Alright. Judgement day. Thank you all for your input. I'm glad I found myself on the same page as the vets that have been doing this a while.

Probably the most obvious negatives is the broken play tray and the water stains on both playfields. The Model A seems intact at first glance. Not sure if the Model B is missing the upper ball track cover or not. Not a sailor but I thought the model boats were neat.

Got it all for $120. Not the best deal on these things I know; unfortunately you see these things move around here for $100+ all the time, even the rough ones. Tried to channel my inner American Picker/Curiosity Inc. Open to constructive criticism.

Thanks again for taking the time.

You don't regret the ones that you bought. You regret the ones that you didn't buy.

I bet you can find a play tray or even an entire front door that will work. Don't worry about an EXACT replacement--the factories threw all kinds of odd stuff together.

I think you did good! $60.00 each...in basic cabinets...even searching for a tray..it is worth it.

I have a front tray exactly like your broken one. Thanks to poor packing and a rough UPS trip, it arrived with slight damage on the front corner, but the pieces were in the box. I recently relocated the pieces, and will patch it up and send it to you for a few bucks plus shipping if you are not looking for a perfect condition replacement. If your interested let me know and I'll spend some time on it.

I was just reviewing your pics of the back. You are missing a few parts, including the metal spring loaded track cover. I have some more recycler parts that you may end up being interested if you have no other source.

Since the machine my tray came off of is so similar to yours I though I would post pics for reference.
A little dark as they were taken in my attic.

    The donor machine

    ModelAfront.jpg

Here is the back. A stock model A exactly like yours with all the covers, etc. in place.

    ModelArear.jpg

I found this on Ebay with the machine, a spare complete front door, and a spare complete front glass frame with good chrome, listed with a "Look at Me" starting bid of $25.
The buy it now price was either $300 or $400.
I put a minimum bid in and nobody else bid on it so I got all the stuff and got it shipped to me for around $110. I tried to communicate with the seller after purchase but he wasn't in the mood to talk apparently.

I got the tray patched up for you and I have the complete track cover assembly as well.

brokenbluetray.jpg The original damage was limited to three pieces,
but after working to get the edges of the hole back to their original positions, I ended up with 6 pieces.

I worked from the outsides in, and the last piece had to be trimmed up a little to fit.

brokenbluetrayrepair2.jpgThe inside looks ok, but fragile. brokenbluetrayrepair1.jpg

So I put a patch over it and painted it blue. It is difficult to see once the tray is on the door.

The outside after a little carving and filing.
Not perfect but functional and a lot better than what you have!

For the track cover I have the metal track cover, the swing spring, the pivot pin and retainer.

That gets you functional. Did you want the cosmetic covers also?

Pic is of the same part, but I have it in green like your machine.
