Why is Neon Genesis Evangelion so much a giant in the pachinko market

As a hardcore Eva fan myself, I seen the stats OP quotes from Evangelion communities on Tumblr and general anime forums across the web along with articles. So I too am curious. How did Eva become so huge in the pachinko industry? When I visited Pacchinko World in North Carolina, there were more machines dedicated to Eva than any other anime/manga license! Not 1/3 as the OP's experience but certainly enough to be noticeable as you do a quuick tour of the place before playing! I don't know how it is elsewhere in the U.S., but at least Pachinko World confirms it (which is a strong indicator since its the only dedicated pachinko parlor in all of the U.S.A. atm).

my experience in japan is that it's popular but not nearly as overwhelming as that Reddit OP would make it out to be; they're focusing on one popular theme while ignoring all the other popular themes; Godzilla is ever-green, for example.

Yep, EVERY other theme is comparatively un-popular to Sea Story! There’s probably hundreds of different versions of that one over the years.

If you've ever gotten a high stakes bonus game on an EVA machine and the Main theme goes blaring sending chills down your spine you get it
For me personally EVA 5 was the first game I played and actually won money on so that and SSS from that era (2008ish) will always have a special place in my heart.
