The root cause is the 'Samurai Force' video graphics chip on these machines. I've seen the problem on several Lumina framed machines that use this chip, and one of my Victory framed cells is starting to show similar symptoms.

It seems to be temperature related, once it's started up ok, a quick blast of this chip with a can of freezer spray will trigger the fault, and warming the area with a hair dryer clears it up again. I think it might be a problem with the soldering of this chip to the PCB, but I don't have access to the right tools to remove the chip and resolder it, and I can't justify spending several hundred updating my reflow soldering set-up for something that might not be the solution.
