Default A Craigs list steal and a question...

6 days ago I inherited a vintage Nishijin from a deceased friend that was ready for the junkheap and scrubbed it down with brasso to get through the rust, polish the cel and pins and threw the plastic parts in the dishwasher.Successfully restored it has been playing without a jam for 3 days non-stop by my wife and 3 granddaughters.

Yesterday morning on a whim looked a craigs list and and found a Mahjong Monogatari © 1991 Heiwa also known as a Mahjongg Story.

Ad said it "mostly worked" and came with 1000 balls and a stand...couldn't pass it up for the balls alone...

It looked amazingly cherry, but was pretty well jammed up. Took it apart cleaned out 6 misc screws that had been deposited along with some small toys from his 10 year old and it fired right up...Will put pics up after I clean the cel and pins...

My wife has been playing it all day and I realize I need another 1500 balls. The fever round can pay 2400 balls and my wife had 2 of those today. Now the question.

Anybody who might be familiar with this family of machines (this is my first Modern) about half way through the levels I get a picture of 3 sticks of dynamite with a lit fuse. Is this just a low ball warning or something more sinister? She was able to continue in both instances with me acting as a ball lifter ...drenched by the time I was through..Hot in the garage today..

I have attached a generic pic of the cel, but will send the real mccoy when cleaned up.

Thanks for any advice or tips on this series...

Awesome! I especially like the explaination about how you restore and fix and the wife plays and test and in the garage! When I fist got into Pachinko, my wife was adament that they would not enter the house. Well, as I restored a few in the garage, my wife would come out and play / test the one or two that I had working.

Just to let you know... I now have a room in my home dedicated to these machines and I have 7 of them.

Get ready to expand your collection!

Hi Henry - you've found yourself a beauty there! I never played this machine while in Japan, but Heiwa still rate this as one of their most historic machines. It was their first machine featuring a full-colour LCD screen and was wildly successful at the time.

BTW: this machine is generally known as 'The Mahjong' (source: Heiwa Company Annual Report 2001) in English - no need to add 'story' I believe.

    Have great fun with it!
