I can burn dvds and cds with no problems, it recognizes external and zip drives from cold start.

the system found drivers for everything, dsl and zip drive by itself with no cd needed.

transfering files is no problem. I want to get a new printer, so I haven't hooked one up yet.

I'm using my printer and another zip drive on my 6 year old system in the kitchen

my Mavica camera uses floppies, and the new system doesn't have one, I am loading pictures to zip drive and transfering them that way

A Vista tips and tricks thread was a good idea, LD. Thanks!

A Vista bashing thread... well, that's old news.
And, as usual, the majority of those bashing don't even own it!

I really am unaware of any problems with Vista. Things work well for me. In fact most things work better...I know a lot of you hate Microsoft. But they were the hero's. Most people have just forgot or never knew why and how we have the amazing toys.

Back in 1981, my first computer was a TRS 80 Model 1. Back then every want-to-be computer had there own version of BASIC. Microsoft standardize the whole format. And left it open (free) for third party applications (hardware). Apple came a long with a competing format and keep it closed. We have these toys in large part due to Microsoft. What was Apple's contribution to all this? ... A CLOSED SYSTEM. Apple did every thing they could to make and keep the hobby (well it is no longer a hobby) expensive and exclusive to a few.

Bash all you want...Microsoft were and are the Heroes. And I personally refuse to buy anything made buy Apple. Even my MP3 player isn't theirs. (A 30 year old grudge isn't bad...Is it?)

I'm not a Microsoft basher, I have supported them for a long, long time. It's just Vista that I am very disappointed in. I have a fast new machine and can't use it for the reasons I bought it for...I wait and wait and wait for new drivers only to find it still don't work.
I also find it very insulting to be talked to like a 2 year old and that is just how the new security features treat you. Thanks to one of Luckydog's links I has able to turn that silliness off.

Well I've been logging in all week using my laptop which is a nice one it's a Dell running XP-Pro. I use it all week long during my normal work week just popping it into it's docking station at either my office or home. It's a t2400 running at 1.8ghz and 1.5 gigs of ram. It's brand new and features one of the newer laptop wide screens.

Now with 1.5 gigs of ram, and I've only had a browser open since I've been here, I am currently showing 770 megs of ram left to me. One application running and half of my ram is used up. This is piss-poor ram management. This is typical PC.

I don't know about Vista, never saw it, never want to. I can only imagine how much overhead thats dumping into the operation.

As far as computers are concerned, I can't wait to get back to my MAC.

I've had Firefox be a memory hog in a PC. If I've used it for a while, then check memory usage, it's using up to a gig. Close it, reopen it and it's back to normal.

Firefox is using 108 megs of it as it was just reported by task manager. That means the overhead of 600 megs is for the system.

I pity da po foo dat only has 256 megs of ram. Your disk drives must be working overtime to keep up with that swap file.
