PT member Cardwii described using a q tip to apply a small amount of polish on a few nails at a time. Then use: light load, twisted cotton, twine wrapped twice around the nail.
It is easier, faster and works better than the shoelace, in my opinion. I use about a 6' piece at a time, using a new portion of string on each nail.
I have to put tape on a few knuckles to prevent blisters...

    For what it's worth!
