Default Fixing up an old machine - questions

We have an old Pachinko machine that I think my in-laws picked up in Japan in the late 60's when they lived over there. It's a Sankyo. My son wanted to fix it up so he dragged it out of the basement and he's cleaned it and gotten it working for the most part.

My first question is that at some point in its life, someone apparently cut the wires that presumably would have led to a battery. Any thoughts about how to repair this? My son was thinking he could just attach new wires (by peeling back the plastic and making new connections) and attach a battery but I'm clueless. Can he do that? Will it work to make it light up?

Second, I don't really understand how they're hung up. It has giant brackets on the top that imply it's meant to hang on the wall. But my kid seems to think it would be awkward to get the balls out of the little plastic bin on the back. How are they usually installed?

Thanks! And forgive my total newbieness. I poked around a little at some threads but I didn't totally know what to search for.
