the tone of the text seems like its be in sort of a joking manner.

looks more like a spoof. IMO

Our church has to pay royalties on any songs that are sung or played during the services.

Its a flat yearly fee, but, if we want to play or sing something special they must pay an extra fee.

I'm sure a lot of churches don't do this, but, it is the law!

talk about biting the hand that feeds you ........as usual they've gone to far they ain't gonna get @#$% in royalties if they keep it up cause nobodies gonna pay for it .The movie industry told em to go bite the big one .they make more money from an Oscar nod then they possibly loose to INTERNET people (who probably wouldn't pay to go see the movie any way. if you like it you'll probably go buy it anyway .) so they still send out screeners despite the mpaa's request to stop the practice ......

The actual lawsuit was challenging devices that can record music in digital format... not the broadcasts themselves.
The Onion article is obviously a lampoon based on that. It's what they do... their articles are parodies.

Heck, record companies PROVIDE the music to radio stations (along with other promotional items and 'goodies') to make sure their music gets airtime. Having been in radio myself, I'm quite sure of that!

The Onion is a satirical newspaper.
Go to their home page and see some of their other 'news' stories.
    Funny stuff.

Sadly.. it looks like the RIAA is taking that spoof from the Onion and trying to make it reality. They are lobbying in Congress to overturn the exemption that radio stations don't have to pay royalties to labels because they are helping sell the music. Link is here

Sadly, I see all forms of music play getting crushed by the RIAA wanting more money... which most of the artists will rarely see.
