A few of the parlors have a mix, but from what I've read pachislo is starting to outpace pachinko in terms of growth. I gather pachinko is still more common, but pachsilo is gaining ground fast. The pachislo machines tend to pay out more than the pachinko machines (a token being worth more yen than a pachinko ball), which lends to their popularity.

As far as starting a pachinko parlor outside of Japan, that could be very difficult depending on the state you live in. Considering people are gambling by using them, it would be the equivalent of opening a casino. I know in Las Vegas the cost for a background check alone to open a casino is between $500,000 and $1,000,000. It's not the kind of thing you do on a whim.

Welcome. I'm sure someone more familiar with the parlors can answer your question but I just wanted to say Thanks for joining up!!

Most of the parlors (say around 75%) in Japan are mixed but there are a good number of dedicated parlors with pachislo taking up the lion's share (mainly because the machines are a little cheaper, less unwieldy to change, and can bring in more money (generally higher odds). As for which is more popular, pachinko still is and probably always will be because it's older and seen as having more tradition. Pachinko players have a range of ages while pachislo players tend to be the younger crowd.

As for pachinko parlors outside of Japan, I've heard there are (were?) some in Taiwan and South Korea but I've yet to confirm that.

    Oh, and welcome.

When I lived in Vegas during the late 60's early 70's there was a pachinko pachinko parlor downtown on Fremont street, it was in one of the little casinos on the left side of the street when facing the Union Plaza. As I remember it was never very busy and only lasted a short time before they took everything out and put Slots back in.
