He still doesn't know what the other guy bid, but if he types in a bid for $10,000 he should be able to find out.

I had someone do this on an auction I was bidding on. One ID bid a large amount, exposed my max bid, then retracted the big bid as a mistake. They never bid again (in violation of E-bay rules.)

No, I don't think I won the auction. I seem to remember being relieved when someone else outbid me. The whole incident made me nervous about buying from the seller. It could have been an honest mistake, or a funky way of shill bidding.
