Do you know Pachinko?
4 chapters (Pachinko & Slot, Pachinko Halls, EXPO 2005 Aichi Japan, and Others). 152 pages. Large paperback. Color. Printed with soy ink. Translated from Japanese into English, Korean, and Chinese. Beautiful iridescent silver cover. Title refers to the fact that Pachinko was first introduced in Nagoya.
This book is a hoot! It is actually geared to those who were planning on attending the Expo 2005 Aichi Japan. It includes maps of the area and an extensive “introduction” to many of the Pachinko Halls in the Aichi area. Translation from Japanese to English is very basic and often very literal, which makes for some very interesting and fun reading, especially if you use the “American” connotations for various translated phrases.
The book begins with the history of Pachinko, a description and layout of a typical Pachinko hall, and a step-by-step manual of “how-to-play” both Pachinko and Pachislo machines. The myriad of pictures is fascinating, and again, the wording will bring many smiles and chuckles. My favorite section gives descriptions of typical prizes that can be won, and the typical cost of each prize.
Being a “veteran” player, much of the “how-to-play” portions of the book make sense, and I did learn some facts about both types of machines. However, I was frequently puzzled by the wording. For instance, the book uses the term OOATARI for the first time on page 18, but does not offer a definition (jackpot) until page 59. Even the glossary starting on page 26 lists OOATARI, but does not explain what it is, except to say that it” takes place when three same pictures align in a line” and that “Volumes of balls will be gained at this time.”
There is a totally awesome comic strip starting on page 57 entitled “Viva Pachinko” that is a must read. I’d love to know who the model for BobbyDavisJr. was.
There are 2 Conversation Lists (lists of frequently used phrases), one starting on page 98 and continuing through page 107, and another starting on page 128 and continuing through page 137, that give Japanese pronunciations of English phrases. These will be extremely helpful during your next visit to a Pachinko/Pachislo Hall in Japan.
Someone who has never experienced a Pachinko or Pachislo might have a difficult time understanding some portions of the book, but I think it’s a “must-have” for all Pachinko/Pachislo regulars.
I just want to thank Brian for originally bringing it to our attention AND Arby (the man with the purple hat) for going to all the trouble to contacting his source in Japan to get this in for us and giving me this terrific great gift!!!!
