    Default Quick Time.

A lot of stuff is put up here using quick time and you need to have it loaded on the computer to view things using it. I have downloaded quick time before and installed it but it made itself the prime program and messed up all my stuff with windows media player. I like media player and want ever thing to stay the way it is! Only go to programs or a shortcut from the desktop to bring quick time up and use it. I had to have a computer guy get it off and restore media player the way it was! If I load quick time can someone tell me exactly how to do it so it does not mess up media player? Be specific on how! To correct and do what I had to the last time it is not worth having on the computer! Thanks Laz.

It's a bit difficult to get as specific as you would like without having everything running right in front of you at the time and I don't.

So with that said, you should have an option upon downloading to specify what types of files you want that program to show such as .mpg .mov and so on. The quicktime format is .mov If all you want to do is be able to see those files on that software that is all you should have set up for it to run on. Anytime a new piece of software is introduced onto your computer it will try to make itself your end all software as programmers tend to think what they code out is so much better than everyone else's regardless of your particular preference.

You can also use Windows Explorer and click on view and then file types and completely specify what runs upon execution of what type of program. It is your ultimate control feature and where you override any settings a particular piece of software has done to your system settings.

I have all 3 types on milliminum and windows xp, they work fine on either computer.

if you save movies in documents, you can got to them and select open with either media player, real player or quicktime.

My main question with this is how when I down load it and tell it to set up on computer what to do so it does NOT make itself the main video player and change all icons and settings of the movies I have in documents files. I want wmp to come up first and if something needs to be played in QT I can go to it and run it.

Ok, here's my 2 cents worth. Any program that tries to take over in my opinion is not worth having. I do not have QT or Real Player installed, nor will I ever install them for that reason. I don't need the crap nor do I need all the other stuff that gets jammed in there with. Real Player is the king of spy ware. QT is an Apple program and for some reason they still think they have a chance of cornering the PC market, .

I'm going to throw in my two tokens worth that isn't going to help you any more than anyone else's.

As Tulsa said above, during the install or when you do the first run of it, it will ask you something along the lines of "Do you want to associate commonly used files with this software." You have to say 'NO.'

If you have already installed QuickTime, you can go to your control panel and there will be a QuickTime option. Once you click on it there will be a drop box where you can choose the "File Type Associations" option. It will give you a LOT of options about what will open with QuickTime.

Of course, just saying I don't want that to open with QuickTime doesn't tell the system what you DO want it to open with. I haven't used Win98 in a LONG time so I can't tell you exactly where to look. There is an option in Windows, though, where you associate extensions with the programs that open them. For example, anything that ends in .html will open with your web browser, anything that ends in .wav will play in your audio software, etc. So what you need to do is go in and change that association.

You can use the command line option 'assoc' to do this, but if you don't know what your'e doing it can get a little hairy. I do know that there is a graphical version of this, but I have no idea of where it is in Win98. :-( In WindowsXP you can open any file browser window, click on the Tools menu, then File Options. In the panel that opens there is a File Type tab that you can change everything you want to. If it's there in 98 you're set. If not I'll have to see if I have an old machine I can put 98 on.

Tulsa and cmk have just about covered wwhat to do. When it asks what files to associate with it, I make sure NONE of them are checked. No problems on my computer.

There is an alternate program for playing Quicktime files.
It uses older media player version 6.4. One advantage it will not change all your settings for your original file setups.

Thanks Dritz. I will try it after I get this computer fixed again. Something keeps changing my home page and wont allow my anti virus to work or get updates.

That something is spyware, in all likelihood.

Have you kept all of your protection software up to date (ie update it at least once a week)?

Sounds like you caught the Sober X worm that is programmed to do what you are experiencing.
    Go to :

    securityresponse.symantec.com
and click on the information on W32.Sober.Xmm link

    or :

    us.mcafee.com
click on Virus Advisory : W32/SoberMM!M681

    or: www.trendmicro.co/download/dcs.asp
    click on the sysclean package.

If you can't go to those above sites (the worm may actually have edited your hosts file)then you need to do a little more and I have the info for you.

    Good Luck.

Well I ran the program. It said the worm was not on my computer. It was a good try now back to start.
