Default Flipper 80's Universal Slot quick questions

Hi there. I had a couple of quick questions about a machine I just got. It didn't come with any tokens/medals. I was wondering if I can buy some generic ones that it will take, or if it will need a specific token/medal that was meant for that machine. Wanted to know before ordering some off ebay. I want to ask too about finding a manual for it, but I know that's kind of tough. It's an 80's Universal brand skill stop type slot though. I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Welcome. Generic tokens will work, except for the ones affected by magnets (do not buy the cherry tokens from Amazon, basically). If you want a handful of tokens to start with, check out a local gaming bar or bowling alley that has pinball machines. They tend to use tokens and you can just buy some tokens from them at 25 cents each and play some fun pinball while you're at it. .

There is a generic manual available online and on eBay, but there's not a whole lot to know tbh. As long as you know the reset sequence/odds settings, that's about all there is.

Reset sequence (generic, may differ slightly from machine to machine): Turn off power, turn settings key to on, turn on power, find the display that shows a number from 1-6, push the button inside the door to cycle through the numbers, change it to 6 if it isn't already (or whatever odds setting you prefer, but usually 6 is good for home use), push the knob that spins the reels down for a second, turn the settings key off. Close the door.
Soft reset for when the hopper had to be refilled: Push the button on the inside of the door OR turn the door key to the left after closing the door.

Thank you for the reply. Thanks for telling me not to get the cherry ones off of Amazon, I might have done that. I'll look local first but may need to pick up a bunch from ebay. When I was working with it this morning I found 2 tokens so I got at least an idea of what I'm looking for. With those tokens though I was able to spin the reels and apparently I won, but there was no coins inside it to pay out. I could hear the mechanism spinning and grinding, then it stopped and is just flashing the middle red light at the top of the game. I'm guessing it's in an error because it can't pay out. Turning off and on the slot it will just continue to flash the red light. If I press the reset button (The bottom left inside the cabinet in the picture) it will start spinning the mechanism a bit and go back to flashing the red light. While it's like this it doesn't accept the tokens anymore, just sends them to the coin return. I was thinking I was just going to have to wait until I get enough coins for it to pay out, but your mention of resetting the machine makes me think it's more than just pressing the button. However I don't think there is a number button for the payout odds like you are describing. I'm posting picture so maybe you can recognize it and help me out, but if not I appreciate the help you've already given me.

You did reset the machine, but the hopper is insisting on paying out your winnings. You need to fill the hopper (quarters will fit, even though you can’t insert them, the hopper can pay them out generally) and let it pay out. You can’t win more than 14 at a time, so hopefully you can scrounge up a few to let you play around with your game.

Is there a small button on the circuit board mounted below the coin insert mechanism, next to the little transformer? Idon’t see a 7-segment display here, so it might show on the front. One of the buttons there might trigger it as well, but I have not experienced a machine that did it that way.

Thank you for your reply. I figured that would be the case as far as it wanting to pay out, I just didn't have the tokens yet. I ordered 100 to start with. This is going to be a gift for my Mom for xmas, I'm mostly hoping to get it fixed up well enough before giving it as a gift, and having fun with it before I let go of it would be great too.

As for setting the payouts, There is a green button on the coin sensor, it says medal senser (in japanese because they call the tokens medals). I think if I press the button it acts as if I inserted a token, I'm not sure. I think the number display on the front is not working at the moment so I can't check that. I'm not sure I need to worry about setting the payout though, my mom or myself would be happy with whatever it's set at. Thanks for the help again. I'll report back after I get the tokens.

OK so I got 100 coins and put them in the machine. So here's what has happened so far. Turned it on and hit reset and it spit all the coins out and kept the jackpot light blinking and sounds going. Put all the coins in it again and hit reset again and it spit out some of the coins and was ready to play. Played it a bit and to test out the button hit the 'collect credit' button where it spit out all the coins and got stuck with the jackpot light and sound on again. Went through filling the hopper and resetting a few times again and it was ready to go again. Played a few games and when I got a winning combination it spit out all the coins again and got stuck on the jackpot again. It seems to want to pay out too much. I'll keep messing with it but any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

I suspect the coin sensor on your hopper. May just need to be cleaned.

Thank you for the suggestion, I'm trying my bet to get it cleaned out, but also trying to figure out which part is the sensor and how it senses heh.

New update. I'm pretty sure I found the sensor. it's got a part number U-88p and it's a little black box. There is 2 little bulbs on the bottom that look down at where the coins slide through that should be the sensor. I cleaned it off as much as possible but didn't seem to make a difference. The wires it's connected to seem to be in fine condition, although the power cable to the whole hopper I found has the top 2 rails pulled out. Not sure if it affecting anything though, it would be strange if that was the power rails for the sensor specifically. Anyways if it is broke it should be a cheap part to replace if I could find it anywhere. If anyone is interested I'll post a picture of what it looks like to help me search for it.
