    Default Model A project

I purchased this model A from a local collector. It’s in pretty good shape and could be played after a little cleaning. Since I need a distraction from life I plan to take it apart with the goal of getting it back together clean and functioning again. I’ll replace the playfield with a custom design. I’m planning on an Apollo 11 theme. I found some pretty cool pictures on the NASA site. I’ve done several pinball machines but this will be my first pachinko project. Wish me luck. Today I started taking some of the parts off the front and back. I stopped before completing either side. I was surprised by the number of parts on the back. It is more complicated than I thought. I like doing these threads to monitor my progress. Unfortunately I’m very slow since I only work on the game when I have extra time. Once all the parts are removed I’m taking the wood parts to the exterminator. I live in an area that termites love. For $95 I can have piece of mind when it comes into my house. Here are a few pictures. CFE159A2-348B-41E4-B92D-D9FFE6B85A6C.jpgE17C41B6-13DC-4030-83FE-1A0F0BDD0FC7.jpgCEAD56F5-9AA7-4994-835F-A54EBC90FEE2.jpeg

Nice machine! I look forward to what you come up with! Be careful though; some folks around these parts don’t take kindly to people replacing badly faded flower power factory playfields….

    $209 buy it now?!?

There’s always an endless supply of model As, they are a dime a dozen! Nishijin paper playfields just don’t hold up to the test of time like many other models. Unless stored in perfect conditions. I certainly would not pay more to get one specifically because it was badly deteriorated.

eBay is the worst place to buy a vintage in my opinion, with a few exceptions, unless it’s a rare model you just have to get; by the time you pay for shipping; you end up paying $150-300+ for a machine that can be bought for $20-60 locally in my area with a bit of patience and basic negotiation skills.

But if you have the means, be my guest to “save” it!

I spent an hour today removing more parts from the game. I’m still surprised by the number of parts. Getting it back together is going to be interesting. I have a lot of pictures although I suspect I will go backwards one step for every two forward. I think I’m going to save the rest for after it comes back from the exterminator. I also printed out some pictures from the NASA website and made a draft board to determine background and picture placement for the playfield. I’m not happy with the pictures or placement but I have to start somewhere.

Since the game is at the exterminator I’ve been cleaning, polishing and painting where needed. This is my progress so far.

The part cleaning continues and the game is back from the exterminator. During the wait I ordered two kinds of stickers for the spinners. One says NASA and the other says Apollo 11. I’m trying to decide which I should use. I stuck them on over the nails so they aren’t flat to see what they will look like. Which do you think I should use?

How about you use both? You have 6 spinners, go 1 each top row, every other one 2nd row.

I think it would look good with the NASA stickers on the top 2 spinners and the Apollo 11 stickers on the 4 spinners across the middle.

On a side note, when I use overlays on spinners I like to take up some of the recessed area in the middle of the spinner by gluing a washer in the recessed area. This helps the overlay lay flat.

Thanks for the tips. What material do you use for the overlays?

I print them on photo paper, then laminate them.

Spray the back of the overlay with spray adhesive and attached to the spinner.

I cleaned 80% of the parts and took everything off the front of the playfield. Removing the rails was a challenge since they were very tight. I was also surprised by the number of nails. It was a real eye opener. I thought I would never get finished. Next is to separate the playfield from the frame and remove the old artwork.

Tonight I started a mock-up of the playfield by gluing the background to the poster board. Next is to decorate it with pictures of the Apollo 11 program. Slow but progress all the same.

I’m at the point of positioning the decorations on the playfield background and realized I couldn’t figure out where to put them using the old plastic template. There was too much paper on it to see clearly. I emptied one of my parts bins and soaked it in water with Dawn dish detergent. After scrapping with a plastic blade and wiping I can see good enough. I did split the plastic in a few places that I repaired with tape. I was surprised the original playfield flowers stayed on the plastic.

This is what happens when you go overboard and leave the spinners in the ultrasonic too long. Not an issue for me since I’m covering them with a decal, but still a learning moment.
