Large Staples On The Back Of Machine

I've finished stripping most of the back of my Maruhon and like my other pachinko machines, there are large staples all over the back of the machine. I'm thinking about sanding and sealing the back of the wood, but I'm not sure if the staples can be removed or if they serve a purpose. Anyone know anything about them?

No, wasn't planning on removing the rails, only the front and rear hardware / attractions for cleaning. Are the staples what I see protruding through the front holding the rails in place?

the staples are the parts of the cotter pin that holds the rail to the wood. do not do anything to them unless you are also removing the rail from the playfield

Thanks gents, I went and looked after reading Bowl987 & jasonlujan's posts, sure enough, the large staples help hold the playfield rails. Glad I didn't go medieval on them and rip them all out without asking first.
