Default What is the function of this part

New to the Pachinko forums. Am working on a Maruhon purchased in Okinawa late 70's. I don't understand what the function of the item in the photo is. It doesn't seem to serve any purpose. Any thoughts please?
(Same image twice, I just put of piece of paper behind it so the 'L' was visible.)

    Thanks

That is the overflow shut off. Should you win to many balls they backup inside the machine pushing that lever to disable the shooter.

Thank you Tink, understand what it's for now. Not sure I understand how it would disable the shooter though. Is the 'L' part of that lever supposed to engage something?

    Appreciate your time, thanks again.
