Default Nishijin Super DX Model B Restoration

This will be the 3rd machine that I restore and I am planning on doing a full teardown, clean, and rebuild on it, ala - Dan at Magic Pachinko Restorations. I though this may be fun for the community to watch and helpful for others and myself to document. Here you see 4 pictures of the machine as I received it. I paid $40 for the machine. It looks complete but very neglected.
    The Front:

    The Back

The first thing I am going to do is tear down, clean, and rebuild the frame. So I took the machine out of the frame.
    Super DX 005.jpg
Right now the frame is in 4 pieces and all the hardware on the frame has been removed. I cleaned up the wood from the frame and glued and clamped some splits. It's looking pretty good so far. I am in the process of cleaning the hardware and this weekend I will sand and oil the wood of the frame. So far I have spent 4 hours on this restoration.

Yeah, the "Side.Tross" pockets are interesting. I have found old posting here about how they work but I am not exactly sure what they do yet. I will no more the further I go into disassembly, I guess. It should be interesting.

Yeah, it is gross. It came from a "Hoarder House." The previous owner has passed away and left this among the stuff in the house. I think (hope) the stuff on the front is from cooking residue. Anyway, I have already gotten a replacement glass for the front of it. The biggest challenge here is going to be brightening the plastic parts. We shall see how it goes.

The restoration of the frame is complete. I tore it down to its constituent pieces and cleaned each piece as best as I could. There was a lot of rust on one of the lower corner brackets. It took my bench grinder to get it looking acceptable. I had to reshape the strips of metal on the bottom of the frame. I used a hammer and a small anvil that is on my bench vice. I may have to paint these pieces to cover the blemishes but they will not show until you open the machine so I may just leave them. I sanded the wood with 150 grit then 200 grit sandpaper using a palm sander then oiled the wood with Old English. I also taped and repainted the black stripe on the bottom of the frame. Then it was just a matter of putting everything back together.
    Lessons Learned:

    1. The nails that hold the frame together are virtually identical to “6d Sinker” nails, down to the pattern on the nail heads.
    2. CLR and a sonic cleaner will strip the brass color off of the metal parts. I am not sure if this was electroplating or some other coating but now the parts are just the color of stainless steel.
    3. Paint any wood first, then treat it with oil. I did it the other way and the tape pulled the oil out of the wood and the oil made it difficult to apply the tape.

keep in mind the pieces you striped are now bare steel and will rust.. a clear coat will keep them looking nice

The brass color may have been a lacquer, or some other, clear coat...

Thank you Moparformances and Machgo. I will get some metallic spray covering for those pieces and cover them as I re-do the machine. I truly appreciate your assistance here.

Here's a thought. I could electroplate those parts with copper. Does anyone have any experience doing that?

From what I have seen on YouTube, you need copper sulfate crystals (root killer), copper material (you could use house wiring), and a battery. I'll probably just buy some spray lacquer.

Tonight's effort included the removal of everything on the front of the machine. The chrome door is off and in 2 pieces now (3 if you count the hinge pin). The upper ball tray, the door and the ball handling system are all one piece. The lower ball tray and all of the escutcheons are off the front as is the ball launching system.
    Super DX 007.jpg

After this, I started tearing down the back of the machine. I am probably about a quarter of the way through the back side teardown.
    Super DX 008.jpg

I also wanted to include a picture of my organization system. I use a compartment case, an old cardboard box, some cigar boxes, and a bunch of little plastic baggies to hold all the screws and nails.

Tonight I completed the teardown of the back, separated the playfield from the facia, removed the launch rails, some of the nails, and all but one play field feature. Next time I work on it I will probably finish the teardown and start the cleaning process. No pictures tonight, I've already cleaned up.

I haven't posted an update on this but I have been working on it. Last Wednesday I completed the teardown of the playfield by removing all of the nails and the one remaining playfield item. Then I scraped off most of the old playfield graphic. The plastic laminant was in such bad shape that it shattered as I took it off so I have no stencil for the new playfield when it arrives. I have a plan on how to make one with some newsprint paper. Following that, I did the first cleaning of the lower door assembly. This was very dirty and the plastic is very yellowed, so no pictures yet. I also did the first cleaning on the lower ball tray/ashtray assembly. This will require more work as well.
    Time Spent Wednesday: 5 hours

On Friday, I sanded the playfield and the front frame of the machine. The before picture of just the front shows the sun damage that this machine suffered. The after picture shows a real difference.
    Time spent Friday: 1 hour
    Super DX 010.jpgSuper DX 011.jpg

Last night I cleaned all of the individual ball handling parts that attach to the back of the playfield. I also cleaned the center attraction and the piece directly below it. The center attraction cleaned up very well but the piece below will need some whitening. Also I broke one of the screws that hold the spinners on the center attraction. I just twisted the head right off of it. So that’s a trip to the hardware store. I am taking a lot of the paint off as I clean these parts so I am going to have to repaint things as well.

I spent all of my time last night on the lower part of the rear mechanism. Here are the before and after shots of it. There is still some work to be done here but now it is clean and the white parts will be easy to get to for whitening.

I like this idea! If you ever try it...it deserves a thread of it's own!

Last night I cleaned the top part of the rear mechanism. Unfortunately, the bottom left screw on the jackpot was overtightened at some time and a piece was broken off. You can see the crack in the "Before" picture. There was also a little nib on the clear plastic jackpot cover (that you can see here) that is almost totally broken off but still attached with a little bit of plastic. I think a little bit of crazy glue will fix both of these but I may use epoxy to keep the plastic from getting brittle. I was happy that these white parts here will not require whitening.

    Before:
    Super DX 015.jpg
    After:
    Super DX 016.jpg

I also cleaned and waxed some of the other parts from the back like the ball hopper and the two pieces that go below it. I also cleaned some covers from the lower section I posted about last. Tonight I am going to finish all of the parts that go on the back and start cleaning some of the play field pieces. Tomorrow during the day I will be trying my hand at retrobriting.

Time spent last night: 2 hours
    Total time spent: 30 hours
