    Default Nishijin ABC machine

My latest project is this ABC machine. It was in really bad shape.

All the chrome was rusted and after removing all the rust, there was no chrome left on the metal. So, I decided to paint all the damaged chrome pieces.

The plastic pieces on the playfield were really yellowed, but using Salon Care 40 it whited them pretty good. The top and bottom trays were also faded. I decided to paint those also. This time I left the inside of the trays the original color, (no paint), and just painted the outside of the trays. The bottom tray a piece broken out of it and repaired it using Bondo Plastic Metal.

I put a new playfield on. I used gift wrapping paper. I felt the wrapping paper was to thin to glue to the wooden playfield directly, so I glued it to a poster board. Which worked very well and gave it some rigidity. Once glued to the playfield I covered it with a self adhesive sheet of 5mm Dura-lar. Total playfield cost was about $6, sure beats paying $40-$50 for a playfield replacement.

First off, WOW! what a great job. This machine looks so good now.
    I have questions:
    1. How do you clean the plastic parts to restore the cream color?
    2. What paint do you use on the metal parts?
    3. What do you do to the metal before you paint it?
    4. How do you get the plastic parts, like the front trays, so shiny?

    Thank you.

I used a cleaner called Awesome to clean everything first, I get it at the Dollar General Store.

To get the yellowed white plastic back to white I use Salon Care 40, from Sally Beauty. For the colored plastic I use Turtle Wax Trim Restorer.
If you want to get the plastic really shiny, I use Orange Glo furniture polish.

The metal pieces are sanded and painted with Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover, paint and primer spray paint.

I'm sure there are other products that will get you the same results, but I have had good luck using these.

Great Job, smart money idea on the playfield. Amazing work! The ABC center attraction reminds me a skee ball.

Hi Wayne, how long do you leave items in the Salon Care 40? Hours, days?

In 2 or 3 hours you can tell a difference. Depending on the shape of the piece, you need to turn it so the sunlight hits all the areas directly.

So, I usually set them out in the morning and about lunchtime, I'll move them around and by 3 or 4 o'clock, they are done.

It truly is the easiest and fastest way to whiten the white plastic.

You will need to wear gloves, it will bleach out your skin.

I take the Salon Care 40 and "dob-it-on" the piece, with a foam brush.

Put the piece in a clear zip lock bag and set it in the sun. That's how simple it is.

Anywhere that sales Rust-Oleum spray paint should have it.

I get mine at the local Menards Home Improvement Store. There are a lot of colors to choose from.

I hope I can trouble you with 2 more questions.
    1. Do you paint the plastic parts like the center attraction and if so, what paints do you use for that?
    2. How do you restore the silver finish on the parts like the circles on the side decoration?
I have an idea of how I am going to do it but I wanted to know how you get these results.
    Thanks

I use paint pens, from Hobby Lobby. They come in several colors and tip sizes. I use the fine tip mostly.

I also use permanent ink Sharpies. I use the metallic silver for a silver finish. I believe Hobby Lobby has silver leaf, if you want a "mirror like" finish.
