    Default Repairing broken/missing plastic

In the recent lot of 8 machines, I purchased, was a Mizuho machine with a broken upper tray. It looks like at one time someone tried to glue the pieces back, but those pieces are not with the machine.

Has anyone tried to fix something like this ?

I was thinking maybe using fiberglas or Bondo. Any ideas?

    Default Repairing broken/missing plastic

I had to fix a machine off eBay that was poorly packed and broke the tray in transit. I just used Super glue; it dried very strong. It’s not perfect; you can tell it was broken before if you look close, but it does the job more importantly. Maybe a replacement one will show up on eBay if too many broken pieces to fix.

your best bet is to find a replacement. if you had the missing pieces it would be far easier but you'd still have a visible seam(s).
if you use bondo or fiberglass it's going to be difficult to build up that much area, have it look remotely decent, and be structurally sound not to mention having to then paint it all.

i also have a shattered mizuho tray and was planning on doing a 3D model of it - but not until after the summer. aside from me providing the digital model for free, printing one from a strong resin/plastic would run you about US$200 - a high cost useful only if you wanted a specific color, etc.

my advice if you have the free time is to use the ramen noodle method to try a repair yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3h1_j3XnjM

The ramen noodle idea is interesting, but I would use something different...lol.

For your tray, I would seek a replacement--it's too far gone, in my opinion, to make a reasonable and cost effective repair.

Look into a product called Apoxie sculpt. It is a 2 part epoxy, clay-like, that is quite strong and can be molded and sculpted. It can be used to create smaller pieces of trays that might be missing. It can also be used as an adhesive in some applications. It is a very versatile product. I have used this stuff to make prototype pieces that I later cast in resin.

I ended up using a product from Bondo, called plastic metal.

I cut a piece of aluminum coil stock, (about 1 inch wide), bending it to the rough shape/curve of the tray and epoxied it to the inside of the tray. That gave me some kind of a frame/outline to adhere the Bondo to. I applied thin coats of the bondo to both the inside and outside of the tray. I just kept applying thin coats of the Bondo and sanding to get the exact shape I needed.

Here are some before and after pictures. I'm fairly pleased with the way it came out.

I painted it a similar color as the original.

The bottom tray was also broken. Instead of trying to fix it, I used another tray.

I didn't have a Mizuho tray, so I decided to retro fit a tray from a Kyoraku parts machine, I have. I cleaned it up and painted it white.
