Question Poor payouts - Gameplay not entertaining

I recently acquired a 1999 Macy CC Angel. The payouts are terrible, to the point of not being fun to play. I get a free spin most often (guessing, 1 in 10), 2 tokens, less frequently (1 in 25ish), and occasionally (1in 50ish?) a 10 token payout. But that's it. No big wins, no bonus rounds, no excitement, just a black hole for tokens. I've probably played 500 tokens since I got it, and every single session is a steady loss of tokens until I'm out.

My understanding is that real slot machines are designed to pay out about 95-97% of what they take in. A playing session consists of numerous small losses, interspersed with big wins. That way you FEEL like you're winning big (and having fun), even when the reality is a 3-5% loss (on average). Shouldn't this machine, even though it is purely for entertainment, function a similar way to make it fun and encourage use?

The instructions I have indicate the payout settings range from 1 (hard - 60%) to 6 (Easy - 125%). Following those instructions, my payout appears to be 6 (110-125%). If I'm reading this correctly, I should be winning 10-25% MORE than I'm putting in. But that is *definitely* not what's happening.

    Am I doing something wrong?

All those percentages are calculated over hundreds of thousands of spins, as all slot machine percentages are.

The following is from the Gambler's Bookcase website:

Every slot machine has a predetermined payout percentage. When you hear things like "our slots pay back 98.3%" this means that over the long-term for every dollar inserted in the machine, it will return 98.3 cents. Conversely, we could state that as for every dollar played, the casino will retain 1.7 cents. These percentages only hold true over very long-term play consisting of hundreds of thousands or even millions of plays.

Many people misinterpret these percentages and think that if they play with $100.00 on a 98.3% payback machine that they can only lose $1.70. There are a couple of things wrong with this line of thinking. First, theoretical percentages will be attained only over long periods of play. Over a few dozen, or even a few hundred rolls, the payback percentage will vary greatly.

Secondly, if a person brings $100.00 for slot play, he or she usually will not limit his or her play to inserting this amount of money into the machine only one time. Most people will buy twenty dollars worth of tokens and continue to play with this money until it is gone. After inserting the first round of coins in the machine, they will continue playing with any coins left in the tray, and they will continue this pattern until no coins are left. And then they wonder how it was possible for a 98.3% slot to take all of their money.
What if...the HOKEY POKEY, is what it's all about?

In order for Las Vegas cheaters to determine if there was an exploitable wheel bias on a particular roulette wheel in a casino it required logging over 10,000 spins.

Consider in a large enough series of random coin tosses there would be strings of a million heads and tails in a row.

I appreciate the info. Being schooled in the hard sciences, and working in InfoSec, you definitely puts it in a frame of reference that resonates with me.

I just finished feeding it another handful of the several thousand tokens I've played since getting the machine. And having only hit a significant payout (7-7-7) once, I cannot help but wonder... How much money would a typical player be feeding one of these machines? i.e. What is the "value" of a token in circa 2000 Japan?
If they were quarters, I would be currently be ~$750 spent and (maybe) $50 won. I can't imagine that type of payout having much replay value. What was the target market for these and the typical game play? I'm not imagining something like Vegas were people drop a few hundred and sit down for a "session". Must have been in a location where they were played almost like the lottery. Drop $1,5, 10 and play until it's gone. If you hit big, great. If not, you killed a few minutes.

With over 900,000 "medals" logged, this is definitely a thought provoking game. I think the highest I've ever seen in a video game is 150k or so.

Try altering the payout to something like 3 or 4. thats what I set mine too.
