Default replaced tulip fins, need nail finisher

had to clip the nails that secured the tulip fins in order to replace with 3d printed version.

any advice on how to stamp or secure the new nail hinge so it doesnt slide out? a DIY method would be appreciated; I can't buy a hydraulic press just for four tulips!

I've had to do this for one of my machines before. Basically, you're going to want to squeeze the holy heck out of them with a large pair of pliers. It worked for me, but my hands were sore afterwards.

I don't know what exact size you would need, but you could use a Push On Star Lock washer.

Look up on youtube how Marty re-does axles for Matchbox cars. It's difficult to explain but once you see him do it you will understand. Marty's Matchbox Makeovers...

Alternatively, you could use a pin drift to smash it flat if you can get a small "anvil" in there.

Carefully put a small blob of epoxy--maybe JB Weld for metal--on the end of the pin.

i was thinking of the lock washer option - maybe with a dab of gorilla glue for extra protection
might stop by a bead store and see if they have sized butterfly backs (for earrings) that match a nail diameter

Channel locks tend to have long handles. Long handles = less force required = less hand pain. You can put pieces of pipe over short handles to increase leverage as well.

the head would look funny sticking out..

    but its a good concept

split the end of the nail like a cotter pin and then use a chisel to separate the two half's

I’d just try putting a glob of hot glue on the end; easily removable if doesn’t work and no risk of damaging it any further.

after some trial and error with the other methods - I think I found an easy way. I used shrink tubing on an abraded nail. It's held up against pulling and in action.
I preferred the brass-collar method used in the matchbook axle repair but something about using superglue didn't sit with me.

Not sure what you are referring to by brass collar, but I'm glad you resolved the problem!

Marty uses a drill press to spin what is essentially a finish nail with a cupped head onto the axle in order to flatten and put a ridge, or lip on the axle--very similar to how it was done in the factory. No glue required.
