Default My poor unloved Comet II

I acquired a Sanyo Comet II some years ago as a 3 machine package deal in order to get a PowerFlash. Nothing particularly wrong with the Comet II, other than the wiring chopped off...and the fact that it is a Comet II ! It was tested 5 years ago when bought. Nothing about it is exceptional...except maybe the chrome.
So the "flipper and knob" thread got me looking at my Sanyo electric shooter conversion kit. Now I'm looking for a suitable machine to fit it to. I think I found the one. Not only is the shooter kit Sanyo...the (faded) color almost matches the color of the back plastics!20201016_223729.jpg

Probably not gonna start right away. Too many other "emergencies" first. But...I can't see myself holding out too long. Just looking at the box of parts next to the machine makes me want to start now.

First of all, do all Comet II rear mechanisms come off simply with 6 thumbscrews? That is pretty cool.
    Next mount the ...trip dog?
Then, I wanted to verify direction of rotation...as the trip dog will need to be bent to engage properly. So without thinking, I poked the bare wires into 120 volts! The motor rotated at the normal speed...but, smoke came out and that sad familiar smell! 20201017_205651.jpg

I'm gonna go ahead with mounting the parts. The burned up motorneeds some wood cut to make a solid mount. Possibly need another small pulley. All the pics of ones with all parts intact...all seem to have 2 pulleys. Clearly the front can't open from the frame after converting...so, securing front to frame would be recommended. Just mocking up the pieces...there seems to be NO room for a ball catcher! Therefore, some remote catch system (funnel and hose) needed.
On Monday, I'm going to take it to Dayton Quality Starter. They rebuild starters and alternators. I used to work at the auto parts store across the street from them, and often asked them technical questions. Also sent customers who wanted their original starter as opposed to a remanufactured one.
When I was a kid...taking apart everything I could find a screwdriver for...I used to see motors like this all the time! Even with the wrong voltage the correct transformer fixes that!

The little gear attached to the armature spins nicely. I think all the damage is in the primary coil windings. I'm taking it to a starter/alternator remanufacturer tomorrow. They should be able to do it...or offer me advice on how to do it myself.20201018_220707.jpg20201018_220720.jpg

its interesting you have two transformers.. i'm not electrician but could they be using one, to step down to () 24 volts then the other to step down to 6 volts..

when you hit it with 120 you let the magic smoke out..

Might be hard to find a dual secondary transformer with unbalanced outputs. I did a fast check on Newark Electronics site and only saw mirrored outputs. Somebody might make a 24/6 vac dual output, but it might have to be a custom made one. It would be more work, but I suppose you could use one 24vac output to feed a voltage regulator circuit that rectifies and limits the output to 6vdc.

I'm no electrician, but know some basics. I don't know about 2 transformers. The transformer steps down 12ovac to 25.2v...does not state ac or dc. The 24v then goes to the primary windings of the motor. As I understand it...the primary windings around the iron core create an electromagnet out of the iron core. As you can see, there are no permanant magnets in this motor. I suspect the windings in the armature are fine...just the electromagnet windings.
Does any of this make sense?

Having no luck locating another motor. I have decided to measure the wire and unwind it. The wire measures .020". From a website...that is 24 gauge. However, a label on a spool of 24 gauge enameled wire as .067". As I am not sure, I still have research to do. I have unwound 10 wraps. I am going to count the number of wraps and try to duplicate.
I am out of my area of expertize...so, any advice is encouraged.

I came up with 290 wraps of whatever gauge wire this is. When I Google "enameled wire", I see a bunch labeled "magnetic wire". That makes sense as the windings make a magnetic field.
I could have made a mistake counting (I got confused a couple of times). Maybe it is 300 wraps. I don't think 10 wraps would change much.maybe speed? As I was unwinding it...as I reached the sides of the plastic spool, the wire was melted into it, and felt like the wire would break as I pulled on it. Plus the final layer was melted into the bottom of the spool. I will lightly sand it before rewinding. No breaks or melted wire, just many shiny parts where insulation melted off.
Going to do more research to determine what wire to buy.

That whole motor assembly and gearbox looks very similar to the ones in my conveyor lifters. Even down to the small indents on the plastic. wheel. Those are 24vac.

But no cam to push the hammer.

I successfully removed the laminated steel core...and destroyed the plastic spool in the process.

I wonder if you could replace it with a small fan motor. Just replace the core with the one with the gear. Of course it would be 120VAC then...

Wonder how fast that old one spun?
