    Default 1972 Nishijin Spring Jet playfield replacement project

    I came across a deal too good to pass up on FB marketplace, just picked up this Nishijin Spring jet for $25 that’s in average condition; I figured would make a good father/son restoration project with my 10 year old son since the chrome is still in decent shape, no rust or pitting. I’ve fixed up/refurbished a few other vintages but never tackled a playfield replacement.

    The playfield on the other hand is badly faded and water stained which drives me nuts. Full disassembling/cleaning and playfield replacement is in order! The goal is to get it looking as nice this one that Rival did: http://pachinkoplanet.com/zencart/in...roducts_id=108

    (A lofty goal! )

    Luckily this one works good already; just needs a lot of TLC. If anyone has any first time playfield replacement tips, please chime in. I’m trying to come up with a list of all the tools/materials need. Does anyone have a PDF with the playfield replacement steps? (Or a good thread with lots of pics?) I saw one was posted here a few years ago but the link is dead.

    Also, anyone know what different artwork for the playfield was available from the factory with these? I like the different background on the one Rival did, haven’t made up my mind which background to choose or just get a exact replacement of this one:

    I like that model.

    Have you considered printing your own?

    Not really; I’m thinking of going with a correct for 72’ playfield that’s sky themed.

    Got it narrowed down to two I’m trying to decide between; Sunrise or the other Rainbows playfield different than this one came with.

    2. Rainbows:

    Good luck with your restoration! I'm in the middle of replacing my first playfield right now (similar Nishijin machine), myself. There are a couple of good videos on playfield replacement on YouTube (Dan Welch) that are instructive. Things I didn't consider when removing the playfield board (and I didn't see mentioned in the videos or forums that I found) were:
    1) the playfield board itself was nailed to the frame using nails that are rifled (not ring nails but more "grippy" than smooth nails);
    2) my playfield has a lot of water damage (ergo the replacement); I hadn't considered that the nails mentioned above would also be rusty as a result. It took a lot of effort to get the playfield board out of the frame;
    3) there are two wooden dowels installed to align the playfield board with the frame. I hadn't seen reference to these and I destroyed them (not the end of the world) while extracting the board from the frame...

    I located the sticky with the correct PDF link with the steps; I’m on the right track now!

    Just ordered the “Sunrise” playfield, new bumpers and tulip stickers from Pachinko Planet, so the ball is rolling on this restoration, pics to follow once I make some nice progress.

    I have to say; now I finally get what everyone raves about the Nishijin model A “recycler”; it’s clearly superior to most any vintage pachinko! Since it can be played with just 200-300 balls because of reusing “wasted” balls it barely needs any manual filling of the hoppers. I also like you you can see the payout balls being dumped and the way the bell sounds (kinda quiet). I wonder why they stopped making recyclers?

    I often wondered why recyclers were discontinued. I just always figured that since they are a gambling machine...the fact that the losing balls were mixed in with the winning balls, this makes it difficult to keep track of profits. With the Model B type machine, the losing balls and winning balls can go to different catch bins to calculate profits easier.

    i would guess it is a cleanliness issue.. balls threw a machine once then cleaned.. but counting winning and losing balls would be a very important stat..

    We’re making progress; most everything from the front has been removed/cleaned/polished; even the big spring inside the Jet (phalus?)

    Getting those tulips off without bending the chrome part is not easy.

    Next up is to remove everything from the back tomorrow!

    Making some progress; got the front and rear stripped; now just need to remove the old playfield, polish the nails in the tumbler while waiting on the new background to arrive.

    Hardest part was removing all the staples without breaking anything and the track removal dealing with all the cotter pins.

    You can really see just how ugly these playfields get with age and water damage once stripped!

    Yeah; I’ll might call the customer service line at the Pachinko House in Miami FL and see if this UV damage is covered under warrantee.

    Got my nails done! First did a 20 min soak in vinegar, 2 hours in the vibratory tumbler with fine crushed walnut shells and about a teaspoon or so of Blue Magic polish; 2 hours with just the walnut shell media. What a difference!

    What the nails looked like after vinegar soak:

    4 hours later after tumbling:

    This project has snowballed into refinishing the frame as well since the cigarette burns on it are driving me crazy. Which is a multi day project in itself; thinking about making a matching cabinet as well!

    I got the playfield replaced today; looks a bit different than it used to!

    Big thanks to Pachinko Planet for all their excellent restoration parts!

    That's going to look really nice, once you get it put back together.

    It’s done! It took a lot of time and money for sure, but end result was worth it! The frame on this one is real weak so made a matching oak cabinet to strengthen it for years of gameplay going forward! It now looks as good as it plays!
