I was gonna edit the post but it looks like I can't do that on this forum, so here's a clearer image of how these (maybe) work:

Are you saying these were home-market machines modified to be used in an arcade?

No. They probably came out of an arcade somewhere.

Although they could have been modified for home use, but mechanicals are so simple, wouldn't think that would be necessary. All the 'lockout' mechanisms are easily bypassed.

What are the lockout mechanisms you speak of? I've heard it mentioned before but I never understood specifically what was being referred to.

The one that stops the shooter from being fed or paying out if the upper hopper is empty.

ah that's what you mean, I always thought it meant so kind of security to prevent players from tampering.

The only tamper thing on vintages is the double pane of glass. Prevents the use of magnets to move the balls.

No pics to work with...but, on something like a Model B Nishijin: if someone behind the machine would push down on the long bar that opens the jackpot...the balls fall out the back of the machine instead of the front. This happens because of the "hook" that is at the jackpot seesaw. If the seesaw is in the up position (because no winning ball has rolled through, tipping the seesaw to the down position), the hook holds a tipping tray in the "non tipped" position, spilling the balls out the back. When a jackpot ball is present, the seesaw is in the down position, moving the hook away, freeing up the tipping tray to tip down letting the balls spill out to the front tray. "Anti Cheat" This is why the jackpot seesaw has a cover over it. Also the long lever has a catch the the jackpot ball unhooks as it presses down. There is also a cover over the rod going up the right side to the jackpot. All to prevent unauthorized manipulation of jackpots.
    Hope this makes sense.

See, that's really fascinating stuff. Was it in reaction to players slipping something behind the booth to cheat? Or trying to minimize how easy it might be for an attendant to help a player cheat?
