    Most of the time if the ZNR protection diode has blown, it'll just be the shorted diode and the fuse that needs replacing. It is possible that something else on the PSU board may have taken a hit, but you won't be able to tell until the shorted diode has been removed and the fuse replaced.

    You can run the machine with the protection diode removed, if you are absolutely certain the supply voltage is clean and correct. A varistor will offer some protection, but it's not very fast acting (compared to the OEM components), so if it gets another 110v hit with only a varistor as protection, expect the bridge rectifier diodes to fail and probably the switch mode regulator chips as well. If the machine is wired to a decent quality 24v transformer, the varistor should be good to protect against surges and spikes on the mains supply.
