    Default cleaning pachinko balls

I'm wondering what you guys consider to be the best way to clean pachinko balls? And how often do you clean them?

I have the impression mine are getting a bit "greased up /dusty".

I like to use a dishwashing soap, I like the ones with Oxy Clean in them.

I clean them a few times a year based on usage.

use Dawn or CLR in hot water, swirl balls around, rinse in clean hot water,

then dry in a fluffy towel by rolling them around.

I just pulled my oldest machine and balls out of storage. The balls were dusty and some had rusted a bit. I used CLR and a hint a dish soap with some hot water and it cleaned them right up. Lay them on a towel and roll them around and you're good to go. Just make sure there's no water on them before you put them into your machine!

Buy a fine garment bag at any "Big Box Retail Store" to put the balls in and put in the dishwasher. The dishwasher does all the work, washes and dries them.

I got the bag from WalMart for $1. Works for tokens also.

Just push the button that says Pachinko Balls.

I lay the bag out flat on the top rack and use the Normal Setting.

Tnx a bunch. The dishwasher idea is awesome, gonna try that.

I'm very curious if my dishwasher tablets with 'shine solution" (for glasswork) will make my pachinko balls extra shiny to

    Morning Moparformances,

Just browsing posts and ran across this. Have recently had some experience with this as my pachinkos have been sitting in the basement and we have had some moisture down there (hopefully dealt with; damn mildew!). Sorted through all of the the balls.

Most were still in good shape. Threw them in a plastic coffee 'can', sprayed a little silicone lube on them, gave them a good swirl and then poured them into a rag to wipe them off. Silicone dries without leaving them greasy, very slick. Maybe not the best choice? They look good!

Bought a Frankford Arsenal Quick-n-EZ Case Tumbler on eBay. Bought a 5 LB box of walnut tumbling media from Academy Sports to get started and the next day started looking for alternative tumbling media! You can get Kay-Kob or similar 'natural' corn cob kitty litter at Wal-Mart; about half the price for twice as much! Another option is 'Lizard Litter' from pet stores; another Walnut media. Have one more option to share below . . . The walnut media from Academy came with a little pouch of polishing compound, so added that to the half of the media I was using for first pass.

Next sort was any that had a little surface rust or mild discoloration. Into the case tumbler for an hour with walnut media then changed to the walnut media with polish for another hour. Sorted these and pulled out a bunch that looked shiny and new. Spray with a little silicone and into a rag.

Third sort was ball with visible rust patches. Into the case tumbler for an hour with walnut media for several hours then changed to the walnut media with polish.

Each time I'm pulling some balls out that now look great and throwing any with ANY discoloration back in.

My final sort was the balls that had sat in the catch tray in back that I had put some bubble wrap and a piece of felt in. Guess what attracted and held moisture? The balls on the bottom were rusted to the felt and in bad shape. Any balls from that failed the first couple runs and my very worst went into this batch. Figured I had nothing to lose, and got some of the aluminum oxide from my media blasting cabinet. Ran it for several hours and have been able to salvage some more of the balls. Sorting into walnut and walnut/polish. All balls have the rust removed, however, I still have a batch that are dull steel. May run in the oxide again, step up to the walnut, then finish with the walnut and polishing media. May have some that never get shiny, no matter how may runs through the walnut.

In searching for 'alternative polishing media' I've found the references to the cheaper corn and walnut media and recipes for do-it-yourself additions. Several are:

    • White Rice - CHEAP as a tumbling media; cheaper yet if you buy large bags
    • White Rice / Brown Rice - mixed 4:1. This was recommended as a media that left a little bit of oil from the brown rice on casings
    • Grits
    • DO NOT USE MINUTE RICE, PAR-BOILED OR ANY PARTIALLY COOKED RICE (you'll get goo)

    Polishing Media

    • Add a teaspoon of Comet, or similar cleanser
    • Add 2 cap-fulls of 'Nu-Finish' Car Wax and 2 cap-fulls of 'odorless mineral spirits' (supposed to keep the dust down)
    • Throwing cut strips of dryer sheets is supposed to remove some of the dust and remove dirt from the media

The upside, I can use all of the above for my cases; well, mabye not the aluminum oxide! Your mileage may vary!

    John
