    Thanks Tulsa.

Quick Update - it's not a speaker/voicecoil, it's a Piezo, I've managed to open it up by carefully cutting the seal with a scalpel - the wire's off inside (looks like I pulled it off but I straightened it to see how much was left) Going to attempt a repair - if I rotate the backplate 180 degrees the fine braids leading to the wafer will be long enough to resolder I think and as the housing is symmetrical the speaker can go either way up so the wires to the PCB can still face downwards. Here's what's inside and the busted wire/braid :

It's fixed ! Sounds much better in stereo

If you find this has happened to yours just remove the solder from the broken wire terminal with a solder sucker/pump to reveal a hole in the connector (pic 1) then pass the piezo braid/wire through the hole (pic 2) then solder it (pic 3) Carefully replace the backcover checking the braids don't get anywhere near each other inside, guide them apart if necessary - they are not insulated or lacquered and will short the amp if they touch inside. Re-glue the back and save a few £££ (or $$$ )
