Default How many of you have played Pachinko in Japan?

I'm curious to know. How many of you have been to Japan and actually played in a real parlor environment? I have, years before I found out they existed in the USA. I figured the machines costed a mint and didn't even consider seeing if they were available. Then one day, a random craigslist search led me to a pachislo machine a few months ago. That's why I am here today!
I am looking for a Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) Pachinko/Pachislo. If you have one for sale and are in the USA please let me know!

I have a Sea Story I might part with, but shipping from Az to the mid west is kinda crazy. Send me a PM if you are still interested.

I know some (many?) members have. I have not...but would love to! Japan itself, would be a wonderful vacation, and I would certainly visit MANY pachinko parlors if I ever go! As I am a vintage pachinko guy, I would not see any vintage machines, unless there is a MOM & POP store that has some set up (not likely, but not out of the question). I would get to try out all of the most modern machines, and could become a modern/vintage pachinko guy!

Over 5.5 years working for a Japanese company (I no longer work there) and spending a total of about 7 weeks in that country...I played for all of about a half hour. I only played the first time I went. It was really overwhelming and the guy who took me, because I wanted to go, had never really played it himself. I probably lost the equivalent of about $30-40. I never went again, despite walking past several around the town I stayed in for the month I was there on one trip. The smokey enviroment bugged me, too. Now that I own my own machines, it's much more enjoyable. If I ever go back for a vacation, which I would really like to, it's a fun place to visit, I would probably go to a few parlors.

A follow up question would be:
Who is currently in a 12-step program for pachinko addiction?

I think I played once. This was back in the late eighties. Like ehisforadam, I could not stand the smoke. The last time I was in Japan proper was 1993. (Holed up in a Narita terminal for 2 hours doesn't count.) You could spot a pachinko parlor a kilometer away as it was the only building with copious floral wreaths and displays outside. So many flowers I was expecting to see the winning race horse on the red carpet.

My Wife and I are heading to japan next May. I'm tempted to try playing but from what I have read it may not be as fun as playing at home. I'm not a fan of smoky cramped places but maybe that's just the articles painting a bad picture

Nope the articles are pretty accurate..., they are smoky, cramped and NOISY places.

As far as 12 step programs for pachi-addiction...As Jose Jimenez would say..."Oh, I hope not..."

There are some specialist parlours that only have early modern and vintage machines, I've seen images of them in Japanese online blogs. Just don't ask me where they are
If I can get there and lose the wife for an afternoon, I'd head for the parlours. And if I can lose her for the evening I might try and find some other type of entertainment as well

yes... there are non smoking parlors. But they seemed a bit rare to me. Well... I would immediately leave, because - well...

Anyway. Depends on where you are. I can remember one really fancy place right by Dotonbori in Osaka. Very clean. Not at all pachinko parlor-like inside. More like a disco-carpeted vegas slot room.

And the larger places are so huge and airy it's not so smoky anyway. There are gigantic air purifiers about every 10 feet on the ceiling, and the newest setups have built in ashtrays that suck the smoke right out of any placed in them.

SO. YES. GO. If you iht a long stream of jackpots like I did, it will especially be fun. And I've found that it has increased the enjoyment of my home playing. Like... I won about 18000 balls on my Macross fever over two days last week. Sitting there saying "Wow... that would have been about 60000 yen... but at least I didn't lose any getting here" was a nice feeling. But damn... I had to keep stopping to go outside to smoke... damn California laws. Can't even smoke in a home I own anymore.

I just got back from a 3 week tour of japan. I went into as many parlors as I could. they weren't too smoky, but one was so loud it was like being in a diesel engine. I was the only non-Japanese in all of them. I really don't like the video based machines out there. I prefer the ones that have mostly targets and mechanical items on the main area. I could easily get addicted to these. a lot more fun than casino slots.
please look at my other post as I would like info on the machine I played.
