    Smile Gaku counter case

I was wanting to make a simple/low cost case for the Gaku counter. Something that was fairly easy to build, with some basic woodworking skills, and you could change the artwork easily. The case I came up with requires (1- 4 foot 1x4), (1- 4 foot- 1/4"x 1" trim molding) and (2 pieces of Plexiglas 3 1/2"x11 1/4"). I had all the materials already, but if you were to purchase them, using pine, would be around $10. The artwork is "sandwiched" between two pieces of Plexiglas and slides out of the case. A hole is drilled in the top for the reset button. This is what it looks like, minus final finish. Paint or stain. For anyone who is interested in one similar, I'll show how it was made.
    040.jpg041.jpg042.jpg

002.jpg The overall measurements are 12" long, 5" tall and 2 3/4" wide. The center board, (that fits inside the frame pieces), measures 3 1/2"x 10 1/2". The frame pieces measurements are 12"x 2 1/2",(for the top and bottom), and the side pieces measure 5"x2 1/2". The trim pieces are cut to the same lengths as the frame pieces. The Plexiglas is cut to 11 1/4" long x 3 3/8" wide.

Once you cut all the pieces, one side piece needs to be cut to a thinner width. The thickness of your two pieces of Plexiglas needs to be cut off the width.
    001.jpg

The center faceplate piece needs cut out for the counter to fit into. Take your counter and center it up on the faceplate and trace around it. You will need to leave the corners so the counter has something to mount to. 003.jpg004.jpg The counter measures 3/8" thick. 034.jpg You want the counter to be flush with the top surface of the faceplate. So, the corners need to be router out 3/8" deep. 009.jpg You can test fit the counter and using a straight edge the counter should be flush with the top surface of the faceplate.

No more room for pictures in this post. So, I'll continue in another post.

A hole needs drilled in the top piece, for the reset button you use. I just used the button that came with the counter. 010.jpg

The case can be put together now. Glue and nail the frame together. 013.jpg The faceplate goes inside the frame, lining up the top surface of it with the side piece that is cut narrower. 014.jpg You can use your two pieces of Plexiglas, as a gauge, to nail the rest of the faceplate in. Aligning the top of the Plexiglas with the frame.017.jpg016.jpg

With the Plexiglas still laying there. The top, bottom and tall side trim pieces can be glued and nailed on. The piece of trim that goes on the narrow side is glued to the Plexiglas.
    018.jpg020.jpg019.jpg

Let the glue dry and you are done. The case is ready to be finished. Paint or stain or whatever.

Need to post some more pictures so I'll make another post and explain how the artwork goes in.

The artwork can be printed on most any printer 8 1/2'x 11". That's one reason I made the case the size it is. Also the overall width of the case, 2 3/4", is the width of most Pachinko frames.
The artwork is attached to the first piece of Plexiglas, (the piece without the trim).026.jpg Put your counter in and slide in the first piece of Plexiglas. Once you have your artwork figured out you can attach it to the Plexiglas. I used scotch tape to attach it. Because we used 1" wide trim pieces on the case, that gives you 1/4" to tape to and not be seen.

Being you are designing your artwork on top of the Plexiglas and can see the counter below, makes it easy to get thing lined up just the way you want them. Once you get your artwork done and attached you can slide in the top piece of Plexiglas, over it, "sandwiching" them together. If you decide to change your work later just slide it out and put something new in.027.jpg038.jpg

That's pretty much it!!! Just some more pictures.

GREAT. I'll have to research this. I have three cases to make, and I don't want to spend a fortune making them.

Looking good! Since the topper is shorter than the top of the machine it could be mounted to the left side and perhaps incorporate it with a ball hopper on the right side. Nice job, I like it!

What is a ball park on your time and the material list / cost? I'm guessing you got more adroit after the first one!

It does look great, you do excellent work!

Material List and Cost: [The cost is determined on the type of wood and Plexiglas used. (I used Pine and .100 Plexiglas.)]

    1) 1- 4 foot 1x4...$3.50
    2) 1- 4 foot trim piece. (1 inch wide)...$3.00
    3) 2 pieces of Plexiglas (3 1/2"x 11 1/4")...$2.00 ($1.00 each)

    $8.50 + tax + glue and nails = ($9.25 Total Cost)

Takes about 30 minutes to cut the pieces and assemble.

Great work! I'm gonna use this idea for mine! I knew the Gaku counters could be used on pachislo...but never tried. how about a pic of sensor placement?

The sensor for the "tokens in" is mounted on the coin mechanism. Just above where the token exits.

The sensor for the "tokens won" is mounted in a slot, I cut, in the coin chute that butts up to the hopper, when the door is closed. With the door closed the sensor is right above the slot, on the hopper, where the token exits.

At first, I had the sensor inside the chute. I tried different spots in the chute, it would read the tokens, but gave a false count. I think from them bouncing around in the chute. So, by cutting the slot in the chute, that lets the sensor get right up against the hopper, when the door closes, and gets them counted as they are coming out of the hopper.

I have the sensors taped in for now. I'll run the machine for awhile and make sure all works good before making a permanent bracket to hold them in.

But, as of right now it looks as if it's going to work out good. No problems, the count is "dead on". Here are some pictures.

There are times I hate living in an apartment. I'm gonna have to find someone with a router and other woodworking tools. Maybe I'll put my daughters boyfriend to work on these.

    Wayne - Ooo,
Might be nice of you to start a new thread in the pachislo modifications forum? Then pachislo fanciers would see what a nice job you did.

I don't look in the pachislo forums very often and seem to be looking mostly at the vintage pachinko forum...

    Ask and ye shall receive.

Sorry not really a step by step but close. I haven't built one so I couldn't write it myself yet, so I took the exact instructions Wayne-Ooo gave.

I am still debating adding a counter to one of my pachislos. I usually keep my machines with 50 credits built up in them, so I am not sure the counter would work well with how I like to play.

Card shark, you want a counter. Counters are cool, all your really cool friends have counters! Just think how really rad it would be if you had counters on all your pachinkos!!

Yep, I was the same way. I always loaded the counter to 50 when I got done playing so the next time I played the machine was ready to go.

But, here's the way I look at it now. If I'am playing a machine, that has a counter installed, I play it till all credits are gone and wait to fill it up the next time I play. Got to thinking what's the "big deal", if I fill it when I'am done or when I start. The machine has a counter now and this is the way to do it. It really makes it a little more interesting to fill the machine when you start and watch the counter. Nobody likes to change the way they do things, but the machine is different now with a counter installed, better I think, it's a great mod to any machine.

Besides, as Musky said, All the "Cool Kids" have a Gaku Counter.
