I'm not so sure about that cost estimate. derek1960 sent me about 100 of the old British half pennies two years back via regular post (each about the size of a U.S. Half Dollar) and they came through alright. He packed them in an envelope (reinforced, of course) and although I don't remember what the cost was, I do recall it was fairly inexpensive.

You might look into sending them regular post.
