I just purchased a LG 46" LCD about 6 months ago after having been convinced that Plasma was the way to go and a month of research. For my application the LCD was the winner but not by much.

A couple of pros and cons:

    1. Plasmas are known for having truer blacks in respect to contrast then LCDs. They arent backlit like LCDs which helps the contrast levels. (Pro)
    2. Plasmas are more then twice the weight of an LCD. (Con) In my situation I mounted mine above a fireplace and weight was a concern mounting to a plaster wall of a 60 year old home.
    3. Power consumption. (Con) Plasmas consume quite a bit of energy.
    4. Like you mentioned, Price! (Pro)

If your just putting it on a TV stand and weight or thickness isnt a concern then go for the Plasma!! 1080p of course, nothing less.

Something else the Plasmas didnt offer that I was looking for at the time was internet capability. I watch Netflix, CinemaNow, Vudu, thru the net. Listen to Pandora, watch YouTube vidieos. Man, there are so many cool things going on now. Its crazy!!

    Thats my 2c

on what i have read, plasma last longer now because they are not backlite like lcd

and burn in has become a lot less problem on the newer models

bestbuy is offering 2 year parts and labor on all their insignia house brands.

i've had my 32 inch insignia lcd HD tv for 28 months now with no problems.

I went with a Samsung 50" plasma. Deeper blacks, internet connected device, free blu-ray player, also internet connected type. Plasma's last about as long as LCD's these days, so it's more about weight, placement, etc. Most plasma's also have anti-burn in tech to prevent that issue, but you need to review the setup menus. For the money, plasma's are much cheaper, and for the power draw, it's more but not by enough to put a dent in the price difference. my 3 cents and 900 bucks at Best Buy!

Something that has not been mentioned from what I understand is that the LCD's have a wider viewing range. What about the new LED TV's coming out???

The best NON 3D TV picture are the Pioneer Kuro TVs. Since Pioneer went out of the TV business,
the best around are the Panasonic top the line Plasmas, they bought the Pioneer technology but it is currently NOT
in their sets, I have NO idea why... If you are worried about the best picture, Plasma is the way to go.
LEDs and the like are very good, but IF BEST picture quality is your sole purpose a good plasma will win every time.
I have a Pioneer Kuro 500m 50" and it is TOTALLY amazing. I JUST wish it could do 3D...

I have always been a fan of plasma! My most recent "toy" is the 63" Samsung 3D TV PN638000 and a mounted Boston Acoustic tri-channel speaker. I purchased it for the tv performance first, 3D movies second. I haven't been disappointed! The IMAX 3D movies and specials are unbelievable !
Needless to say, other toys have been put on hold for a little while

I'm a low budget guy and have a bestbuy credit card that i can get up to 18 months to pay with no intrest.

I'm in no hurry to buy right now, I just want to make the right choice when I do.

I guess the best bet for me would be to go check out some models at bestbuy and see what really looks good.

one thing i've found out is the plasma has a glossy screen instead of dull and they do use more power and run hotter.

LD - watch out for better deals from Best Buy - I got 36 months/no interest on mine around October? last year The screen is a little glossy, but much better than my older TV I replaced. Viewing angle is about the same from any point in the room.
