I thought it was a nice article, with a couple exceptions:

unfortunate Japanese approximations of American themes like “Rambo” and “Harley-Davidson.” An Obama Inauguration pachislo comes decorated with an image of the president, arms folded, in front of the presidential seal and an American flag.

Harley Davidson an 'approximation'? It's directly licensed from them!
No mention of the fact that the Obama one is a custom, not Japanese made.

The 'boxes' aren't empty, they have tokens inside, usually gold plated, so they actually do represent something of value. They aren't traded for cash, they're 'sold', then 'sold' back to the parlor, that's how they get around the gambling laws.
