So the second batch came in today (EMS in a record 3 days from Tokyo to NH). Can someone explain what the 2 small boxes are? I didn't have one on the third counter...but it is the older of the 3 so not sure if that makes a difference.

They allow you to use the counter with pachinko machines that have contact outputs or voltage outputs simply by swapping the cables between the two sets of connectors. The connections are marked as 電圧入(Voltage input), or 接点(Contact input).

If you're not sure about what type of connections are on your pachinko machines, then you can attempt to read the labels on the back of the machine using the Battle Counter Output Terminals guide. If you're still not sure, then try using the voltage inputs first as it will be safe if you get them wrong this way round, whereas connecting a voltage output to a contact input is more likely to cause damage.

One more quick question - the middle counter in the pics above seems to emit a high pitched whine that probably would go unnoticed in a parlor but is very audible in a quiet house...when unplugged the whine seems to change pitch, almost like when you discharge a camera flash. Is this normal?

This is a DLP-5S by Daiichi. I own this counter and it is in fact emitting a high pitched whine which is noticeable when you stand in front of the machine. Seems to be "normal" for this ancient type of electronics

It has a electro-luminescent display, they use a high to very high voltage to operate:

Electroluminescence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"They do, however, require relatively high voltage (between 60 and 600 volts) [1]. For battery-operated devices, this voltage must be generated by a converter circuit within the device; this converter often makes an audible whine or siren sound while the backlight is activated."

Thanks guys, while I think it will be drowned out by the pachinko, it's nice to know it's not an issue with the unit itself. I broke down all the plastic parts to soak during the day and will be installing it tonight on the stand - stay tuned!.

I think I know where the confusion set in on my end now...lol. The image below shows a few things I could use some input on (literally!) so let me explain:

The box as explained has voltage and contact outputs at the bottom in pairs of Green/Orange, Red/Blue and Brown/Black. All three terminate in female (Ver. B) connectors.

At the top of the box are pairs of Yellow/Yellow, White/White, and Purple/Purple. These all terminate in male (Ver. A) connectors.

That's all that came with this counter...and I think that's where my confusion began. You can see a third pic that has the right connector for the frame (Ver. C) that becomes (Ver. B). The problem is this would suggest plugging in to the top version not the bottom. Is this just a case of not having the proper cable convertors (i.e. do I need a Ver. C to B instead?).

Oh and just for reference, the plug diagram that came for this frame notes CN3 as the Bonus 2R+15R, CN8 as the 15R, CN4 as Start, and CN6 as the Kakuhen.

Your 'ver. A' connectors are the outputs from the battle counter to connect back to the 'Hall computer' for the parlour to gather statistics for the machine, so should be ignored.

If your 'ver. B' connectors won't fit the frame you intend to use this counter on, then you are going to have to either replace these connectors, or find a suitable adaptor cable.

First a big thanks to Montana, Compirate and Daverob...

I went down and did a little splicing and was happily rewarded with a nice big "1" on my first start pocket spin! Anyway everything is working great - I extended the power leads so they could reach the transformer - it's happily feeding the frame and counter now.
