well. turns out that the second of the machines that I shipped back from boston did get damaged on the lower tray.

it was made of cast aluminum, and not very strong. must have taken a direct hit to the front of the tray.

I glued the pieces back with all purpose adhesive (crazy glue would not stick to this, it was too porous). filled with jbweld epoxy. sanded, primed and painted aluminum color.

I almost think it looked better before the jb weld and painting, but I won't notice over time.

if I really wanted none of the cracks to show, I would use bondo next time.
