    Default Complete teardown and reassembly

I'm completely tearing down a nishijin machine I picked up. Now why would anyone tear apart a complete machine, with the original tray and manuals, if it works perfectly? Because I can. I'm documenting the whole thing and taking lots of pics, maybe someone will find something in the mess. Like the 'staples' that hold the rails on? Not staples so much. They are stapled from the back.

Here's a video of it in action after I cleaned it up. YouTube - Nishijin Sophia 'B' -- Pachinko

I jaust got a good look at the mechanics and apparently, as long as a ball goes through the back of the machine and drops ionto the payout slot, you can do pretty much anything you want back there. say hello to custom electronics. Mario theme if anybody is wondering, the tulips will be pirhana plants when all is said and done.

Well, if it's pics you want, Pics you shall have.

Later, I'm going to reorginize them into a journal of what I've done.

Yeah, that's gonna take some work, just done something like that myself recently.

But your project looks to be more in-dept, can't wait to see the end result.

Depending on my level of motivation and cashflow in the near future, I will be doing one of 2 things. Either I will simply replace all of the pins after laying in some sort of graphic over the cell; or I will be COMLETELY REMOVING the cell and the plywood it's on and using it as a template to create something new. It's not in bad shape or anything, but If I'm going to go through this much trouble, why not go all out and have something new. A 2010 machine powered by 1970's mechanics, why not. On that note, has anyone ever seen anything done in 3d? Like, with multiple layers and such? As long as the firing ramp, and the holes for the lose balls and payout stay in the same spot, or at least close to it, you can literally do anything on the playfield. I was thinking of possibly doing something involving rails on the front. I already have plans to incorporate sound effects into it. I think this may have gone beyond simple cleaning, restoration, or modification. This is flat out building. now... wheres that extra computer?

Actually, the chrome had that oxidation on the front where its gets a little grainy. It took me all of 10 minutes with some 0000 steel wool and water to clean all the chrome, stuff polishes plastic parts really good too. Looks brand new and has a mirror finish now.

Valium, just an FYI, a few if us on here have completely torn down machines and then reassembled. I did it with the intent of replacing all the nails only to find out Like everyone else before me that new pachinko nails are just about impossible to come by. There are some online that are close but have slightly different dimensions. Vintage Pachinko sometimes has them but they are used and cost a buck apiece!!! So be careful when pulling because you will have to reuse them or get replacements from a parts machine. Good luck.

Too late. Pulled them all already. Messed a few of them up, but not to the point I cant fix them. I did snap one off at the surface, still muddling over how to get it out. There was an extra pin stuck in the cell oddly enough. At this point, I'm not sure exactly where I want to go with this. I'm working on it so my kid can play with it.

flick, rattle, flick, rattle rattle rattle rattle BRRRINGGGG. My kid >> "AAAAHHHHHH!!!" He loves it.

You know, I think I've seen these pins somewhere before. Just without the twist. I know that they have to be brass, steel or anything else not only rusts but they don't have the right bounce factor.

Not to toot my own horn, but in 2002 i pulled all the brass Nail Braids and hand polished all of them .The hard part was getting the angle right on the playfield good luck with the rebuild .

If you found some that are the exact dimensions of the originals let us know please. I have seen what you are probably talking about (without spiral) and they are called "escutcheon" nails. They have no spiral and are easy to find online. But they are always a little different from the real deal. Either the head is too small or large but the right length overall or vise versa, etc.

Okay, pulling out my micrometer it tells me that what I need are 15Ga. shank with 14Ga. head. 1 1/4 in length. I'll see if I can find them locally first, the guys down at the hardware store are used to me coming in and measuring stuff with my meter, they understand the need for EXACT sizes.
