Yes it can be really chilly on the sea front apparently the ideal metal detecting times are during September and October and especially when there is a North Easterly wind, something to do with the tides and the way they cut into the sands and uncover and redeposit stuff...

Well Sunday we managed to go down to the beach twice for an hour or so each time, we try and search a different part of the beach each time if possible

The best type of sand to look out for is what we call black sand, it is denser and probably coloured by the oil and clay??
but that is where the coins usually sit, on that layer, and after certain tides it is brought to the surface (Pic 1 shows a little of that sand)

1st outing (before lunch) we found a mixture of Modern and slightly older coins, I believe one of them is a very worn silver sixpence??
I remember finding one when I was young girl too!!

My daughter really liked the 'Isle of Man penny' which is the 1st coin on the 3rd row down

that particular term doesn't apply to the Queen
its a term reserved for queens who gain the title through marrying the King

Thumbs up Re: Blimey 2 more new toys...

Very cool. I don't know how I missed this thread, it's been a busy month for me. Thanks for the photos and updates, Hanabi. I might have to search Craigslist and get the kids involved in that hobby. We have some nearby ghost towns that would likely be productive!

Well we have been out and about metal detecting a couple of times a week, finding the usual stuff, coins, scrap metal, etc etc on Hornsea and Bridlington beaches

But whilst detecting on Saturday at Hornsea we found something not quite buried in the sand, it was a Memory Stick!!

I knew I needed to find out who it belonged to, it could have very important information on it, or maybe irreplaceable photos of someone's family etc etc

So I opened it up in my computer, feeling really awkward about it, doesn't seem right to be looking at other peoples stuff somehow,

anyway I recognised a lot of folder names as having things to do with Health & Safety and subcontractors legislation, same sort of things we use ourselves at work, so I knew it was important, I didn't want to open any of the folders, but I saw most were labelled with a man's name, and I managed to trace this person and found a phone number for him!!

I called him and explained I had found something of his and he was very pleased to know it was safe and is now reunited with his memory stick!!

I'm glad we found it before the tide came in...

This Saturday we thought we would go up to Scarborough beach to try metal detecting, first time we have tried there

We arrived quite early so we could have the beach to ourselves for a few hours, and it wasn't too long before we got our first finds,

I found an Old Penny, then a few minutes later another, then another, and another and so on!! I couldn't believe it, these Old Penny's were prior to decimalisation which I think was 1970 wasn't it??

Anyway, the really strange thing about these Old Pennys was that we found them with 4 monarchs on and were date ranged between 1880 and 1967. The old 1880 ones were worn and had a black residue on them, but the bulk of the 1967 ones were bright and looked recently minted

    All very strange...

in the first pic i have placed a 'new' 1 penny at the top to show size, (yes i found a couple of new / current 1p too)

In the 3rd pic, at the right side of the pile of coins on the denim jacket, there is something metal and decorative, not sure what that is yet, could be part of a broach or badge, I will post more about that when I find out what it is

I did it the easy way, i bought this batch of foreign coins a few years ago for ten to fifteen bucks,
most are earlier british copper coins.

LD, you need to check your Old Penny's, see if you have one dated 1933, those are very rare and only 7 I think are known to exist

Also, regarding the 1967 Old Pennys, this was the last year they were dated, but they were actually minted up to 1970 with the 1967 date

It was very strange to find so many at Scarborough, I'm thinking that maybe an Amusement Arcade owner was having a clearout and disposed of them at the sea front?? Although they were found above and below the low and high tide marks...

Oh well, at least I have a good supply for an Allwin when I eventually manage to get one

Here in Brighton we have a 'vintage' amusement arcade museum with many historic amusement machines, all which work on old pennies. When you buy your entry ticket you get a handful of old pennies to spend on the machines (they're all restored, working and available for play).

Perhaps there is a similar arcade/museum at Scarborough, and these coins had managed to escape from there. If there is, then I'm sure they would be very grateful for the return of the coins. I know the local vintage amusement museum was very pleased when we were having a clearout of the vault at our arcade and came across a few hundred old pennies.
