Default Power problem with Jet Set Radio?

I recently was given a problematic Jet Set Radio pachislo. The original owner claims to have been playing the machine when he heard a loud pop and smoke started coming out of the machine. He believes it was the transformer that died...so he says he purchased a new transformer and installed it. Now the machine powers up but only the front lights(the "belly" of the machine) light up. The LCD does not turn on and no sound can be heard.

He believes that the transformer he installed is too weak and that a new one will solve the problem.

I know very little about pachislos or wiring/soldering. What does the transformer look like and how can I tell if it's not strong enough for the machine? Then...where could I buy an original or same type?

I can take pictures if necessary.

    Thanks

yup throw us a couple of internal pics of the machine it is easyer to point out the transformer

it looks like a solid chunk of metal with wires on it and usualy gets installed to the side of the reels above the over flow tray for tokens or in the floor of the machine where the over flow tray should be you need about a 5 amp transformer and the rating is usualy writen on it in amps or VA
My rice krispies told me to do it

Took some pictures tonight, will have them up tomorrow.

I moved the small metal brick which I think is the transformer and sparks shot everywhere

Probably not connected very well, sounds like 2 of the wires were shorting out. I would not pull it back in until you replace that unit. or verify it works & make better connections.

On the metal box about half of the wires are soldered to other wires and half are unconnected.

I would mount that in the back of the game to the right of the hopper. Not the best idea to keep on a metal power supply. also I can not tell from the pictures if its hooked up right or the amps. All mine are 5 or more amps and its just 2 wires on one side to the power cord for 110 and two wires on the other side to the game for 24v. from the picture it looks like you have one wire from each side going to the cord??? also looks like some bare wire exposed, use good shrink wrap or electrical tape.

I agree with Chris, shrink wrap all connections or atleast use black tape. Also mount the transformer to the back or side, never let it be loose in the cabinet.

Personally, if you can hold that transformer with just two fingers, it's probably too small. I'd look for a better, higher amp transformer (5-6 amp). That's a center tap type, gives you the ability to get 24 or 48VAC (or is that 12 and 24?). You want the kind that is only 120 in and 24 out - 2 wires in, 2 wires out. And make sure you have it wired the right way around because the wrong way puts out 480 Volts!

Wow...I would not wanna do that!

Just to clarify. this transformer is:
    - model number "LP 480"
-Has 2 red wires and two black wires on one side(1 red and 1 black are actually chopped and have been soldered to the existing power plug that goes to the wall). This side is marked 120v
-Has 1 yellow wire and 2 blue wires on the other side(1 yellow and 1 blue are chopped and soldered to existing wires that go to a "molex?" connector to the main power supply with all the switches. This side is marked 12v 4a

So, I'm gathering that besides the terrible wiring that this transformer is too small. Rather than try to repair this one or make the wiring safe I'd like to get a new one.

Does anyone know what part I need for this Jet Set Radio machine? Where can I buy it?

You need a 120v to 24v 5 amp transformer, 6 amp will also be ok. Stealth & 5-Star both have them. Rita should also have them.

Awesome! Are Stealth, 5-star and Gaku members here or online stores?

    I've tried to contact Pachislo.com to purchase a transformer...but I didn't have any luck.

    This isn't looking good.

I emailed and called Pachislo.com and Stealth and neither have answered.

I cannot find any power transformers on Blue Hotaru or 5 Star.

I found this on stealth...but I REALLY want a transformer that has it's own wall plug(like on pachislo.com).

thats the one you need .just cut off the one that was wired to your crappy transformer and splice the new one on this time use some wire nuts from home depot.

Is a 9amp too much for my machine?

Gaku uses 9amp on all his pachislos and pachinkos. they will run much cooler as they won't have to work as hard.

I have gotten by with 4 and 5 amp transformers on machines too.

a transformer is only going to use what the game demands of it. a larger transformer will remain cooler under load. a 4 amp will work fine for a basic model like Jet Set but might get hot during Big Bonuses. I have games from CF imports that came with 4 amp and never had a problem but they do run hotter then the larger ones.
