    Default Cut nails

The prior owner cut these 2 nails off above 2 of the tulips to make it easier to get a win. Unfortunately, it's way too easy for a win. Does anyone know how to get them out to replace them? Also, any ideas on where to get 4 replacement nails?

wow. that's a tough one. I personally would go crazy with those cut off right above the pocket. I bought a modern machine off craigslist yesterday, to give as an Xmas present, and I noticed 7 nails missing entirely. at least I just have to find nails, which I have from my tulip upgrade.

I agree with guitarman's suggestions that you might be able to drive the nail deeper. I think that my nails still had at least a quarter inch of wood behind them before they would come out the back. you could use a slightly shorter nail in front and nail them in right on top of the old stubs. if they came though the back a little bit, you should still be fine with the ball pathway, since the tulip and hole are below those nails.

I think that nailing in next to the old one would be noticeable.

did the knucklehead that cut the nails off do this above every pocket?

good luck. let us know what you do.

That looks like it's a normally blocked pocket, only accessible when the tulip is open.

That's really unfortunate. I've had several where the pins were bent out to allow an easier winning percentage, but I've never had one that was actually cut.

Per other's posts, I would try to hammer it out the backside if at all possible without damaging the mechanisms on the back.

Thanks all, I'll go ahead and try to knock it out the back with another nail and try to find 4 other nails. The prior owner had neighborhood kids playing on it and he said he just wanted them to have more wins to make it more exciting. At the time, I thought that would be a good idea as my kids are also young, but you win on every 4th or 5th ball and it gets annoying real quick (who thought I'd ever say that!). If only you had odds like this in the real parlors,,,,

I will be very interested to know how it goes with what ever process you use to replace the nails.

Good luck and keep us informed!

Well HeavyG gets a serious round of applause as he is playing Santa this year and is shooting some nails out my way to help with the repair. Thank you!! I'll try pushing the nails thru the back and/or drilling them out if it cracks the back at all. I'll take lots of pics and keep all informed. Thanks everyone for suggestions.

Well, now that the blizzard of '08 is over and things are back to normal, I was able to finally tackle this problem. First of all, a big THANKS to HeavyG for a wonderful Christmas present of 5 real pachinko nails! Without his help, this project never would have happened, as all of the brass nails/escutcheon pins that you can order are too small in diameter to work properly. The closest that I could find was a 1.6mm by 25.4mm, that is too small diameter-wise, but good on head size. Any larger, and the head becomes too large. Also, there are no threads on the end of the nail to prevent backing out.

Tools for this procedure were a dremel tool with micro drill bit and grinder, a modified punch, a set of pliers, and a normal drill and bit. First, I cut the nail body flat and then using the micro bit, I drilled a small hole into the nail. Once this was done, I took a small steel punch which I had sharpened the tip of with a file, and used it to punch the nail thru to the back of the field. After the nail dimpled the wood in back (the first nail caused a small crack) I then drilled a small hole in the wood to prevent any more cracking. Then, I simply punched the rest of the nail thru and tada!! I now have a hole ready to be filled!!

Before I tap in a "new nail", I thought I should ask everyone if I need a brass hammer, or would a normal hammer suffice?

Thanks all, and I'll keep ya posted with the finishing touches after I hear on the hammer issue. Here are some pics of the before and after.

    Great job!

I would tap it in with a normal hammer, but use a small block of wood so the nail head wouldn't get damaged.

When I had to replace some nails I used a normal tack hammer but I put a piece of wood on the nail and hit it instead of hitting the nail directly.

    most excellent job, bananaslug!

now, the broken nail problem is solved, as long as the nail doesn't go through to anything important in the back.

I, too, was the recipient of santa guitarman's generosity, and I thank him for sending me some nails for my machine.

I tapped my replacement tails in with a steel nailset, so I wouldn't accidently whack the wrong nail. (i didn't have a nice small hammer at that point).

a wood block would keep the brass from getting nicked, but 3 light whacks with my steel set (since we already have a hole) did not dent the head on my nails. see how HG man did it, as he's the expert with replacement nails.

Sorry it took so long to get a finished picture up, but with kids, life just plain gets busy sometimes. Anyways, I ended up using a wood block and normal hammer and all went well. Alittle wood filler for the back holes and viola! It looks good as new! Thanks to everyone for all your help on this project, especially HeavyG for the Xmas nails!!! Hopefully it can help others in the future.

I'm going to use this thread as reference for my Sanyo, there are a few missing nails, but also two that are cut / broken off level with the playfield...

I hope that your cut off nails are in an accessible place, or you'll have to take down the back of the sanyo.

your machine is really looking nice there. great work.

my newest comets are a wreck. i'm doing a quick video of before and after, like one of those this old house makeover. i'm hoping to devise a way to tack down most of the flakes, paint and seal between them, then pour a thick clear coat over the whole thing, like embedding stuff into one of those table tops. i'm viewing a lot of tap plastics videos right now.
