    Default Winning Pachinko

I know that the book "Winning Pachinko: The Game of Japanese Pinball" has been passed around a fair amount. Of those people who have read the book did it really give any good insight to winning or was it mostly vague stuff? For example it might say "turn the ball launcher exactly to the middle location because this will cause more balls to enter the center section than any other.." That kind of information (to me) would directly affect how often the spins would occur and perhaps increase your chances. That is information that is "concrete" and can be proven true or false. However I have read other articles on winning and they are quite vague and seem more like superstitious behavior rather than a scientific method. Since the machine basically "knows" whether it will pay out before the spin it seems like there really isn't any real method or strategy that would allow you to win more often. Does the advice only apply to a parlour setting or would it work on a single machine at home?

I have read the said book...

it provides general information. i really think you will learn more by playing your machine and coming to your own conclusions. i would say the best part of the book is the part in regards to the nail placements..

i believe that that is posted somewhere on PT..

but thats just my opinion ...

    your mileage may vary...

one thing is for sure.. dont go spending the crazy amount of money they are asking for it online...

The book does tell you what to look for regarding nail position and which would give you more of an advantage. An example would be what I found with my Horror mansion, the way the nails were bent it was impossible to get balls to fall into some of the higher payout pockets. Look in the Resource Section on here, there is a PDF file on nail bending that is very informative.

the first part of the book talks about the history of pachinko, then it goes into detail of what to look for in the nails. and tricks on adjusting them.

if the nail is moved up or down it will effect the bounce of the balls. if adjusted one side or the other it will effect where the balls will go.

and of course, if they are too close together, its much harder to get the ball past them.

Other than pin placement are there any other things to look for? I can adjust my own machine's pins, although I doubt I will since it seems to work rather well. At a parlour I wonder how they would react if you were going up to each machine and examining the pins on each one trying to locate a "good" one.

Here is a "side question" I noticed in many of the photographs in between the pachinko machines there is a divider strip and near the top it looks like an upside down plastic cup attached. What is that?

the dividers are usually ball dispensers, you put in money and get a hand full of balls.

the top of the machines have call lights to get the pretty girls working there to come to you, similar to our casinos. or machine toppers advertising that model.

    Hmmmmmmm

The physics of pachinko (balls and nails) is rather interesting, but surprisingly simple. Rotational velocity is not a big issue, because of the vertical orientation. So you really only need to deal with forward/backward/left/right, and the related spring tension.

I have logged many hours hammering pins, and I can EASILY make nearly every ball hit the pocket, no matter where you turn the knob to.

So I tune my personal machines to hit the pocket just enough to keep me interested

When I played during my trips to Japan (and you need to get to the parlor shortly after they open... or before) I would pace up and down the isles to see how the machine's pins have been adjusted (of course NO self-respecting parlor would EVER do such a thing HEAVENS NO!), and "pick" the one that I felt I could work with. Picking a machine with the right nail config, was the key to hitting the pocket, and then... it just a game of odds. I found the "hunt" was rather enjoyable, and is, of course, missing from the "home play" experience. That's another reason why I LOVE ball lifters, and Daverob's Dongle/Smartcard hardware, as it brings the experience REALLY close to the parlor.

So when I want an especially fun time... I sneak into my gamecave when I am not looking, and set the pins a little different. Then I am totally surprised when I have to "fight" the machine WooHoo

Examining the battle counter was almost a waste of time, as the machines that looked like they were going to "pay" soon, almost always had a ad pin setup. Probably not a coincidence :/

From personal experience, looking at the pins is fine. It's almost encouraged since you'll believe you're getting a better machine. Of course the real trick is for them to bend the nails to LOOK like they're bouncing in your favor. ^^

As for the side question that's easy. The cup is there for you to use to scoop balls. It's placed as a convenience so you don't have to fumble with them in your hands.

That's how you know you're reading the wrong stat!

Here's a very simple principle to remember:

The battle counter can not be trusted at the beginning of the day. Either read the pins yourself or do what I do... Find something FUN and don't worry about winning or losing.

In the afternoon/evening you want a battle counter with the most wins. All of the machines have the same odds when a spin is made. The trick is to find one which has won more in a day usually signifying that balls got into the main pocket more often to accommodate that number of wins. This is -especially- true with hanemono machines.

It's a simple, but effective principle.

The one major theory that surounds Pachinko is the CHAOS THEORY. When you think you have it figured out the conditions change . Kind of like life.

I read Sederensky's book back in 1992 while living in Japan and found it useful. No other foreigner I knew at the time was there with an interest like mine, and I wrote to him at the time and asked about a few parlour tricks out where I lived in Chiba-ken. He kindly wrote back and I adjusted my play to suit. Can't say it made me a winner, but I enjoyed it more - knowing what I was doing.

The book is very old now, and I wouldn't think it has *that* much to offer you beyond what you can learn from this forum (an excellent resource). But if it was cheap and available, yeah, pick up a copy. Its an interesting curio and a decent read of a foreigner's actual experience playing Pachinko for fun and profit in the early 90's.

i bought that book off ebay about 5-6 years ago.it seemed to to have a vague opinion on how to play pachinko.it was an interesting read, but i believe you could learn more about pachinko by actually playing your own games.i believe you are right about the machine knowing in advance if you will win on that spin.i am pretty sure they use random number generators to determine the stopping positions of the reels, just like the casino slots in the u.s.
