Does anyone know what the four position switch next to the volume control does?

Does anyone know what the four position switch next to the volume control does?

The Taiyo Elec 'Laluz' frame manual just refers to it as a 'Mode Switch' (which figures as it's labeled 'Mode 1', 'Mode 2', 'Mode 3' and 'Mode 4' on the game!) and it says that you need to check the individual game manual for it's function.

Apart from that, I have no idea!
