Wow is right. Have you tried the local cooling application they mention? I might give it a try and I should shut down my PC when I don't use it, it just takes so long to boot up so I leave it on all the time.

If only they would consider that black pixels are the absence of light... The text should be white with a black background. That way the light isn't being projected on the background and it would only be on the text, therefor, it would save the amount of energy used while viewing.

As well you shouldn't turn it off. You should have it fold.

this might be a good idea if it weren't for the fact that most of us are by now using flat panel lcd monitors and the back lighting is always on so you save nothing by making the background black (the lcd pixel is either on or off but doesnt provide the light ). but you do make a definite savings just using an lcd over a crt display anyway . as for co2 output your computer isnt putting out anything the power company that supplies it is putting out the co2 not the computer now if you reduce the amount of energy you use then they'll burn less coal .but if you reduce the amount of energy you use they produce less due to decreased demand and cant afford to run the plant so the price of power goes up to compensate so your paying the same amount or more anyway convenient isn't it ...Most corporations (mass consumers of electricity like the one I work for ) buy their electricity in bulk so they arent about to start shutting their computers down at night .

    You could also help SETI@home
SETI@home is a scientific experiment that uses Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a free program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data.
