    Unhappy Greece is on Fire

Well yesterday and today have been hellish days here in Greece

Most of the Country is burning.. there are fires everywhere there are currently 50 people dead and many are still missing

high winds dry weather and opportunist arsonists all have their share for the blame.

one of the mountains around Athens was on fire

the atmosphere in Athens is full of smoke and its a sickly yellow

the winds have blown ash all over the place ( the third pic is of the ash on my balcony)

things are going to get a lot worse before they get better...

This time of year in the northern hemisphere can be bad. We also live in an area prone to burn, with steep mountains, trees, etc. We had a scary one last year that burned hundreds of thousands of acres. Started by man, of course. It came very close to town and did burn some structures. After 2 weeks, it was put out.

This time of year can also bring the nuts out. I hope most of it is contained soon. I would love to visit Greece one day!

Are they able to airlift water into the mountains to help put it out?

planes are flying everywhere... as well as helicopters

several EU countries have sent planes to help. but there are just too many fires in too many places...

that and the high wind is making it very difficult for the planes to take up water from the sea...

They're overwhelmed by the sheer number of fires at once. I didn't realize how serious it was until reading some articles. People perishing in cars attempting to flee.

they are saying its an organized plan by arsonists...

there is no way that so many fires can start in so many locations at the same time...

they have already caught 2 people for setting fires.. its a mess...

It's difficult to comprehend that people can do such a thing...

I've just been reading the BBC News Website

    it's horrific

I was reading about this earlier today, terrible with so many deaths. If you are saying that some people are starting some of these fires on purpose, then they need stringing up.

Hope you and all your family & friends are all safe and remain safe.

    senseless indeed..

some of it stems from a law here in Greece that doesnt let you cut down trees ( certain types of pine / evergreen i cant think of the name right now) to build something so there are quite a few people who own forest land.. well since they cant cut down the trees its worthless.. thats when our friend the fire comes in...

the fire burns the trees so there are no more trees in the way of making use of the land.. so... well you get the rest of the picture...

i think people like this should be burned at the stake... land hungry SOB's

We have similar laws here. I need a permit to cut down a tree in excess of a certain diameter. Now, I understand some of the reasoning behind this, but nearby this year they had a devastating fire in Lake Tahoe. Probably some of the most beautiful area I have visited. Now a wasteland. In part because homeowners found it difficult to obtain permits to remove some of the fuels that contributed to the devastation.

Here, and maybe in Greece, it is a combination of circumstances. Regulations that are overly prohibitve, greed, etc.

And as for the arsonists, I think they should be placed in cars and burned alive like their victims.

we get a lot of fires here in Florida because it gets very dry sometimes.

many of them are from lightning strikes.

That would only provide an oven for them and they would die from the superheated air before they burned to death. No, leave them in the open with fresh air to fuel that fire. At the stake was always the tried and true method.

I'm not sure when this satellite image was taken, but it appears that Greece is not the only country suffering from these fires.

It was only a matter of time. I held off on the same comment.
It's been said that a lot of humor is developed from tragedy plus time. You didn't add enough time, so I had to you!

    BTW

What was the last thing that went through John Denver's head?
    The Propeller.

John Denver didn't take a bath before his flight, but he did wash up on shore.

What was John Denver's last wish?
    A burial at sea.
