Talking Just call me 'Retro Gal' :D

Well just lately I have been journeying into my idea of ‘Retro Heaven’ again…
So I have dug out the Vinyl and starting listening to some great records!!

Now this isn’t a Thread about Records (unless anyone wants to discuss them??) but it sort of connects……
they look a lot like Records!!

Lately there has been a lot of talk (and hype??) about ‘the future’ of High Definition and Blue-Ray, etc
And this got me thinking, in a roundabout way, to another format:

    Laserdisc!!

Now I almost bought a Laserdisc Player many years ago, but I was persuaded that this new fangled DVD Player was ‘the future’ of home entertainment!! So I came home with the DVD player

But I always wondered about the whole Laser Disc thing, so a few days ago, I managed to buy a nice Pioneer LD Player and have started to collect the Discs

And now I’m wondering if there are any other Laserdisc enthusiasts still out there??

    Anyone willing to own up??

Any recommendations for 'Movie Must Haves'??

In essence a laserdisc is a DVD, but what you're referring to as I recall is rather on the size scale with a 33rpm record. Which is what probably killed it to begin with.

No, I do not now or have I ever owned such a player. As I am by nature a forward thinking individual it will be difficult for me to follow you down into the rabbit hole of memory lane.

Have a great time Alice and we'll see you on the flip side.

Wait, does a laserdisc have a flip side?

Yes they are the same size as Records and they do have a flip side!!

but my player can play both sides without having to get up and turn it over!!

Actually that makes me feel a little bit cheated...

Now I bought the High Def DLP projection TV and the HD Drive for the Xbox 360 and new speakers and such...

but the old stuff is fun in a different way!!

I bought one when they first came out just because Nightmare Before Christmas was released as a box set only in this format with a bunch of bonus stuff like Tim Burtons short film "Vincent" and production photos. Its the only laserdisc I ever owned, and I never bought a player .
(I rented one and copied the laserdiscs to beta so I could watch them )

I still own the NBC box set, and one day I might locate a laserdisc player in the 99cent store so I can transfer them to DVD... While the official DVD release contained the bonus films "Vincent" and "Frankenweenie", the laserdisc is still the only source for the production shots and behind the scenes stuff, at least Ive never seen it anywhere else.

As for vinyl, I am still holding on to most of mine with the plan of one day transferring them to mp3 format. Most of them are cutouts and never even made it past cassette tapes, let alone cd's.

Whats old is new again, I've been getting into the laser disc games. Some great games were released in the arcade on laser disc format, such as Dragons Lair, Space Ace and Don Coyotte (Spelling?). I have the converted mpeg files of these game on my MAME arcade, Great Stuff! If you want to get into collecting these, try and find a Star Wars on laser disc!

Still got my Laserdisc player hooked up, and a couple of dozen discs, including the Star Wars Definative Collection box set with all three films in CAV format over a total of nine discs.

When DVD finally made it to the UK, I slowly started replacing most of my laserdisc collection, but I've still kept the discs of my favourite films and a few that I just haven't got around to replacing yet. ie Star Wars, as I want to watch the same film I saw and loved in the cinemas as a kid, and not something that has had all the flaws taken out of it (for 'flaws' read 'charm'!)

My father had to have one when they were still new. I don't think that the first version could play both sides, that came a little later. Some of the discs back then weren't too reliable, either.
But, it was neat having that big shiny disc, if memory serves me well.

I had 2 two laser disk player already and just bought a 3rd Pioneer at Goodwill with remote and manual for $14.99. I have to flip the disk

I have about 200 laser movies including star wars trilogy and Lord of the flies which is hard to find. and about 50 smaller Karoake disks.

I've been getting movies at Goodwill from 25 cents to 1.99

I also have a CED player with about 50 movies-it has a needle like a record player to play the movies.

I love laserdisc I have about 300 of them some have got the laserdisc rot. I also have a bunch of 16mm films with I love to watch all the time.

I have 4 ld players most were the last ones they made that would also play
dvd. Bad thing I have found with the new widescreen tv's they do not look as good. So I use the video projector to play the disc.
    http://www.lddb.com/laserrot.php

link has some info on laser rot.

CED I have one of them that needs a new styuls. I think it is a rca unit. Old but works.

Any one also have vcd's? I think thsat was a short lived item. I have a few of them and to me they look as good as dvd.
