    Default Toxic Pachinko

Toxic Pachinko - Researchers in Saitama have found PCBs in circuit boards of discarded pachinko machines. Repetitive tests have all come up with about the same results of 0.016mg/kg of waste. It's the first such findings. Apparently the machines tested were all from the same manufacturer in Nagoya who claims the boards were out-sourced so they don't know about production methods. They sold several thousand of that type in 1994. As more and more of the machines are made with high tech circuitry, the problem is libel to get worse. Nearly 3 million of the beasties are disposed of per year. Generally one machine only lasts about one year in which it sees 4000 hours of operation. There is only a small market for used machines and even less for spare parts, so most units get trashed. A new machine only costs about 180,000 yen, but can bring in 20-30,000 yen per day for the operator. Even though there is big money floating around this industry nobody seems to want to take responsibility for the costs of disposal. As a result a number of huge illegal dumps have been discovered, especially in Gunma and Saitama. Some areas have worked out disposal schemes, but there is still a need for national standards. wouldn't it be better to ship out containers of pachinkos dirt cheap rather than just trash them.

it would be fun picking thru their trash dumps

That does look a lot like me!!!
True story... one night my daughter called to tell me about a dumpster 70 miles away from me, where she lived. Old school teacher had died and the family had just hauled everything to dumpster. This was after midnight when she called, we had been at a local auction all that day. When we got home and she called we had to unload the truck then took off for the dumpster. We found stuff like old 1940's & 50's toys in like new condition, jewelry, vintage clothing, tons of old Valentine Cards that students had given this teacher, and too much else to mention. My daughter and I made a ton of money off this old junk. My wife still has some of the jewelry and valentine cards. Some of the first stuff we sold on ebay in 1997 was from this "dumpster dig"

I also like to metal detect and dig in old dump sites. This rural area in Tennessee where I live is great hunting grounds, folks used to just drive off into the woods and create a dump. Found an old Jack Daniels bottle couple of years ago that brought $565.00 on ebay..

Yep that could be me in that picture!!!

When I signed on with PachiTalk I didn't give much thought to a user name. But since then I've been trying to come up with a good one and now, this little conversation has given me the idea for a new name. I need to contact one of the Moderators and see if I can be called the Urban Archaeologist from now on

    Default dumpster?

i know a guy up in detroit that strips abandoned buildings of saleable architectural items. likes to refer to himself as an urban spelunker!! everybody else refers to him as a thief. metropolitain miner is another phrase tossed about. for them that strip old buildings of copper pipe bricks windows etc. sometimes they are right in the middle of a restoration when this happens.

I only dig or hunt on private property with permission. Parks and old church yards are great for metal detector hunting but I ask for permission before doing any digging in those too. But those dumpsters are open hunting grounds as far as I'm concerned. It blows my mind at all the really valuable junk folks throw away!!
