Default Help with a name for a part that overheated.

Hi hate to ask for help.

My woody woodpecker is sick. There is this part on the back that was so hot it was smoking. It is a little plug in piece that looks like a pc monitor plug. It melted the strap that held it to the machine.

I email the seller just now. But if I do not hear back is this part hard to find? Also about how much would it cost. The machine will not shot the balls it lights up and that is it.

    Any info or help thanks

It would not make sense for this part to burn up on its own because it had nothing better to do or it just wanted to give you some excitement. Electronic parts usually burn because they become shorted and draw enough current to overheat and sometimes even catch fire. This part looks like it has a diode, capacitor and resistor in it and it is most likely that the capacitor or diode shorted. I don't know what a "dongle" does but I would be concerned if the short damaged something else in the machine. What the heck is a dongle for anyway?

Ok the seller sent me a replay to my email they are going to send me the part for free. Now is a CR Reader the same thing? That is what they are sending. lol

Also I know this part must do something. But should I check any other parts? I hate to put the new one on and it burns up like this one did. I was shacking when I seen that sucker smoking. I burnt my hand getting the little turd off and out side for safty.

the part you showed us is a dongel it fools the machien into thinking there is a cr reader there

a cr reader is a credit reader that in teh parlors sits next to the pachinko and when you put your card full of credits in to teh reader makes teh pachinko dispense balls to teh value for you to play with

cool I get it it is like free play on a jukebox. Flip a few switches and no more coins are needed.

Wow learn something new every day. Thats why it will not shot the balls. It wants my money to work. :lol8:

The dongle is often called a 'Card Reader Bypass Plug'. All it does is supply a voltage to the pachinko to tell it that the card reader is present, and the pachinko will then enable the shooter handle and allow you to play.

The faulty dongle probably had the diode or capacitor soldered in the wrong way, which meant that the capacitor would burn up and start to vent rather nasty smelling smoke after a minute or two.

It's unlikely to cause any permanent damage to the pachinko and a new dongle is very likely to sort out the problem. There is usually another capacitor inside the machine that might have smoked at the same time, but the good news is that even if it did the machine should work fine without it.

Yes the answer is to always follow the money. The thing I have a question on in my mind about this, is was it the dongle that fried or something from the port itself? You'll know once you receive that new dongle. Maybe they just had a bad solder joint and something arced.

I would not expect anything from the machine to be able to fry a perfectly working dongle. The machine supplies 24vAC to the dongle, and all it does is convert it to about 18v DC using a resistor, a diode and a capacitor, and feed it back to light an LED in an opto isolator inside the pachinko.

To burn up any of these components the pachinko would have to put out more than 40 volts, and there simply isn't anything inside that would be able to put out that kind of voltage (as it comes almost straight from the transformer).

Now if you had a slightly more complicated dongle (maybe one that actually emulated all the card reader functions), then yes it would be able to blow up a dongle like this (don't ask me how I know ), but not a simple card reader bypass dongle.

Thanks for all the help. I got the part today and the machine works great.

Now how do I go about closing this?

    Thanks
